Book Description
About the Book
The Chuar people rebelled in mid 1760's.Their protest continued up to mid Nineteenth century. It occurred in phases. The book covers the period of protests by the Chuar people to the rebellion of the Bhumij people. The book essays to trace the causes, nature and the outcome of the relatively less known 'resistance movement-Chuar Disturbances.' Who were the Chuar people resisting? What were the causes of their grievances? What was the outcome of their movement? Was it a 'Tribal/Adivasi' movement or a 'Peasant' movement? Who can be called an adivasi and who can be called a peasant then? What was the role played by the Jungle Zamindars? And finally how far can we agree with the colonial definition of 'banditry' and how far can it be applied in case of the Chuar rebels. This book is a humble attempt to answer these questions.

About the Author
Amrita Sengupta is a Graduate at Jadavpur University, Department of History, and an alumna of St John's Diocesan Girls Higher Secondary School, Kolkata. She also attends Ram Krishna Mission Institute of Culture, School of Languages and Jadavpur University School of Language and Linguistics. Foreword
It gave me immense pleasure to read the author's manuscript on Chuar Disturbances. It is an intimate history of Chuar rebellion based on both official and non official contemporary documents. In her crisp format she has beautifully blended theory and practice of this primary resistance movement against the British rule. It is well known that there is a raging debate on the character of this movement, which has dubbed as the death pang of a dying order, passing from feudalism to capitalism. During the twilight of the Mughal empire, the defense of the frontier was assigned to the local tribal chieftains with no salary but petty fiefs. They were supposedly rent free chakran lands. But when the British authority took over the charge of Bengal, and established their own structure of justice and police in the interior, all these chakran lands were resumed and made liable to pay rent or revenue. (Malguzar) This led to rural tension and open skirmish, collectively known as the Chuar Uprising, Chuar being a derogatory label given to the fiery primitive rebels. This question that needs to be thrashed out is whether this revolt can be interpreted as a pre-modern freedom struggle on the question of legitimacy. When the service is abolished, the tenures escheated back to the raj. At the same time, such holdings acquired legitimacy as time-honored institution.

Preface
The Chuar 'disturbances' of Bengal was one of the most violent uprisings of the eighteenth century. The purpose of this book is to trace the origins, course and ramifications of the series of rebellions that occurred in late eighteenth and nineteenth century. Eighteenth century was initially solely viewed in terms of political developments in the Mughal Empire. For Jadunath Sarkar, for instance, the personality of Aurangzeb, his bigotry and lack of far sightedness were responsible for the decline. Irfan Habib explained it in fiscal terms. Satish Chandra shifted the focus from political to economic causes and emphasized the economic aspects of the politico administrative imperial crisis. Generally speaking, in most of the works eighteenth century was portrayed as predominantly a dark age.

Acknowledgements
I started to work on this subject while I was still in the University, puruing my Master of Philosophy degree. It is needless to say that neither the final dissertation nor this current version of the book would have been impossible without the guidance of my supervisor Dr Tilottama Mukherjee. She must have spent several sleepless nights to get it done. I owe Dr. Ananda Bhattacharyya for helping me select this particular topic and providing me with critical insights. This version of the book would have been incomplete without the insights and encouragement provided by Professor Sekhar Bandhyapadhyay. I am also grateful to Professor Chittabrata Palit who was not only kind enough to provide my book with a foreward but also helped me in my understanding of the topic. Special thanks should also go to Bidisha Chakravorty of West Bengal State Archives for her patience and the non archival stuff for patiently rendering service to all the scholars. This work would not have been possible without my Grandmother Ilina Sengupta who helped me type the first draft, my mother Swati who always stayed awake till I finished and my friends and collegues Asif, Debasmita, Madhuparna, Vavna, Rachayitree, Poulami, Moushali, Hemen, Arka, Swatilekha and Ajit who kept me honest and competitive. I am grateful to my aunt Dr Bharati Sen for helping me with the geographical and environmental aspect of my arguments.
