Book Description

Introduction

0.1 Every natural, living language changes under the influence of social class, caste, geography, time, age, sex, social mobility, education etc. Language, the social phenomenon, is manifested in various dialects What people actually speak are dialects. Thus it is inevitable that differences should exist, not only between one group of speakers and another but within one group or caste who are living in different geographical areas. Study of language varieties, technically called dialectology has gained importance in the field of linguistics. .

0.2 In Kerala, the Hindu community formed the prepon-derant element of the population with its regional variations in the caste system. The present study is concerned with the dialect of Ezhavas of two districts, viz. Trichur and Ernakulam, .

0.3 Dialect Areas and population.

The two districts are contiguous, bounded by Palghat district on the north; parts of Palghat, Kottayam, and Coimbatore (of Madras) districts on the east; and the Kottayam and Alleppey districts on the south; and the Arabian sea on the west. Most of the parts of these two districts were parts of the former Cochin State.
