This volume offers a range of 42 research papers authored by several scholars that appeared in the International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics (IJDL) during the period from 1972 to 2007 spanning 36 years of its existence. The papers pertain to Malayalam language and linguistics. It is broadly classified into 8 sections, viz. Phonetics & Phonology, Morphology & Syntax, Dialectology, Historical & Comparative Linguistics, Traditional grammar, Inscriptions & Literary language, L.V.R.'s contribution, and Language teaching.
The aim of the papers thus is to pursue the diverse theoretical perspectives through which many issues in Malayalam language, grammar and teaching are being examined and evaluated by scholars for the advancement of knowledge and to pave the way for future course of research in these areas.
The idea of bringing out all papers on Malayalam language and linguistics published in IJDL, in one volume, was mooted on the occasion of the 50th year of the formation of Kerala State and the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the University of Kerala.
A renewed interest in modern linguistic theories and their application to Malayalam language and dialects in a scientific and systematic approach started in Kerala with the founding of the Department of Linguistics in the University of Kerala under the stewardship of Professor V.I. Subramoniam. The founding of the International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics as an outlet for the publication of the research papers in Linguistics and allied fields by both native and foreign scholars was initially sponsored by the University of Kerala but later organized as a separate establishment. Besides, a number of back-volumes of IJDL have been exhausted and there is demand from several scholars for articles on various aspects of Malayalam and other Dravidian languages published in IJDL. We hope that this volume will be immensely useful to students, teachers and researchers of Malayalam language and dialects in particular and Dravidian languages in general, and will be received well by all those interested in this area of study and research.
