Book Description
About The Book

The book "Development and Change Among Tribal Society in Border Areas: A Geographical Study" explores the implications of Christianity introduction to Manipur as a new beginning and its profound influence on tribal populations. The focus is on how Christianity has impacted the social aspects of the Vaiphei tribes in Manipur State, focusing on the social and political aspects of that change. Previous research on tribes was analyzed as a community at a specific development stage, compared to the traits of "modern" societies. Every administrative, social, economic, and religious endeavor was closely linked to their customary and traditional practices. The book also provides recommendations for enhancing the current state of education, agriculture, and land use in the tribal society.

Preface

The book "Development and Change Among Tribal Society in Border Areas: A Geographical Study" explores the implications of Christianity's introduction to Manipur as a new beginning and its profound influence on tribal populations. The focus is on how Christianity has impacted the social aspects of the Vaiphei tribes in Manipur State, focusing on the social and political aspects of that change. Previous research on tribes was analyzed as a community at a specific development stage, compared to the traits of "modern" societies. Tribes are perceived as missing contemporary characteristics and are frequently simplistically labeled as isolated, underdeveloped, and needing integration into the mainstream. This stimulates the creativity of early societies residing beyond modern civilization. Numerous conceptualizations do not fully encompass tribal society when tribes shed their inherent traits and adopt characteristics of the referent society, whether caste or peasant, as tribal societies inevitably experience social and economic changes. The rise of industrial capitalism and globalization has eroded many established institutions, leading many scholars to claim that tribal sentiments persist only in areas where capitalism's expansion is either "delayed or distorted." The Vaipheis possess various unique social and religious customs that set them apart from other communities and related Kuki-Zo tribes. Historically, the Vaipheis held a profound and private respect for nature, reflected in their social and spiritual customs. They believe that nature, including the soil, forests, and rivers, is closely tied to their overall health. Every administrative, social, economic, and religious endeavor was closely linked to their customary and traditional practices. On the other hand, I am saddened to admit that the current education system in Chandel district does not prioritize quality education, as parents only focus on getting their children a degree rather than a quality education. The parents willingly supported their children in switching schools by creating fake certificates, with the dual intention of advancing in class and avoiding paying outstanding fees to their previous schools/colleges. Acquiring phony certificates is quite easy. Certain educational institutions decided to admit students who presented counterfeit diplomas to increase enrolment. The book also provides recommendations for enhancing the current state of education, agriculture, and land use in tribal society.

In this book, "Development and change among tribal SOCIETY in border areas: A GEOGRAPHICAL STUDY the author put various geographical thoughts in different titled articles which maybe essential and have positive impact for the individual and the society as whole. I also personally impressed and appreciated this book when gone through the pages. As it is focus on the development and changes that took place among the tribal society and give many more geographical thoughts in the border areas, which may suit to reveal the people concern in the better way of living. It is also learnt that the author reflected the truth prevails in the fields which may harm and destructive to the environment. Focusing on how Christianity impacted the social aspects of the tribal groups in Manipur is a fact that dealt to change the society so far among the tribal society. Also the initiative taken by the government of India under Look East Policy accelerate the development and change as well.
