Preface

In India is a democratic republic that elects its head after every five year. President is head of the state in India. Article 52 of the Indian constitution says that there shall be a president of India, and then after article 53 declares-The executive powers of the union shall be vested in the president and shall be exercised by him either directly or through officers subordinated to him in accordance with the constitution.

Simultaneously, other provisions of the constitution such as article 74 and 75 etc. speak of the powers and functions of the president in Indian political system. Still, considering the parliamentary nature of Indian polity it seems that president of India vests ornamental powers and performs customary functions rather than enjoying actual powers and effective status as done in United States of America. But, looking in deep, going through the historical analysis and having seen the history of India's president and their influence over the government, we find that reality differs from the general understanding regarding wordings incorporated in the constitution.

President looks like the crest of the temple of Indian political system without which the temple appears to be lacking something important or even losing its traditional identity of being temple. Substantially, all the powers, role and functions performed by the president in India depends on the conditions prevailed and moreover on the particular holding the post, such ideal personality with excellence, not only directs governments but exerts far-reaching effects on whole political system also. They set a milestone to be followed by others. If a person with vibrant personality holds the post, he may turn the Government into quasi-presidential system or at least influence the decisions of the Government. And if a subtle personality comes to the post, he simply acts as a rubber stamp for his Government.

There are some people who have left irrigable imprints on Indian political system and mind set of the people in the post independent era. Such precedent has been set by a great personality and leading scientist of the country, Dr A.P. J. Abdul Kalam. Who worked as a president of India from 25th July 2002 to 25th July 2007.
