Book Description
Preface

When I chose to Compose an Encyclopaedia on Indian tribes I found it to be a most opportune time, as the year 1993 has been declared 'The Year of Indegenous People' by the UNO.

The Indegenous populations of North and South Americas and those of Australia are now 'vanishing loť. The relicts of these indegenous populations are heading to wards extinction. These indegenous communities survive under economic sanctions and protections of First World countries.

In India one may wonder about the very declaration of the indegenous peoples' year especially when such people are at survival risk, even when they are the citizens of the wealthiest nations of the world.

Like any other political organization UNO has also a body named ILO (International Labour Organization). By its name it looks as if it is a socialist organization but contrary to it, this body is controlled by the associations of wealthy European and American churches. These churches have large funds which they receive from imperialist lobby of the West, which have the tradition to use religion for the political purposes.

ILO which is originally an association of Christian churches very well knows that by raising the voice for the welfare of indegenous population they will do no harm to their funding nations.

It is very clear that ILO due to its international contacts is a recognised body. Being supported by Christian Missions it is infact not at all interested in tribals or the marginal people. Its move and intension is to gain the political power.

ILO's Indian representives are all Christians. These Christian representatives call themselves the recognised representative of Indian tribals. It has to be remembered that the entire converted population is infinitely small when compared with the Hindu tribal population. The converts have shed even the very basic characteristics of tribal communities whereas Hindu tribals still retain all such characteristics.

ILO, thus by its political designs wishes to control the entire Hindu or Indian population. Government of India is alert to face any bad situation in the international debates. ILO was the first UNO body to adopt Convention No. 107 of 1957 called the 'Indegenous and Tribal Population Convention'. It was revised by ILO in 1989 and replaced the term 'Tribal Population by the term 'Tribal Peoples'.

One should remember that by replacing the term 'Tribal population' with 'tribal peoples', the UN bodies would mean that the indegenous peoples' right for self determination under international law would include their secession from the country.

Acknowledgements

In the process of preparation of 'A Book of Indian Tribals' I had to collect numerous facts related to tribal communities from the published and non-published works of many authors. It was not always possible to give due credit to such authors at appropriate contexts. I am really indebted to many such scholars and acknowledge my sincere gratitude to them.

Dr. R.K. Sharma, Professor and Head of the Department of Ancient History And Culture Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur and Professor P.C. Pande, Department of English, Government Science College offered valuable suggestions while going through the manuscript.

My daughter Richa drew the maps and helped me in the preparation of manuscript.

I am thankful to Shri Rahul who has timely published the book.
