The book contains detailed information on all major aspects of anthropology of N-W India based on independent field work doneby experts in their own fields of research and teaching. I'm glad to recommend it for all university libraries and science Centers.
The editor is an experienced teacher of Anthropology. He taught at the Department of Anthropology, Panjab University, Chandigarh for 32 years and has been awarded the title of 'Distinguished Teacher' by PU Alumni Association. While in harness he attended many national and international Conferences. It is noteworthy that he was awarded a Bursary by the Royal Society London, UK to enhance his skills in the field of Human Auxology, for which he spent a year under the tutelage of the famous Professor James M. Tanner at The Institute of Child Health, London.
The art of doing Science of Anthropology is fascinating and complex. Central theme of this discipline aims at understanding "Man in Nature and Nature of Man" which guides Anthropologists to investigate in depth various facets of man in time and space. It is this integrated approach that allows investigations into human evolution, biological variations, social and cultural aspects of past and present human populations around the world. Often times the discipline of Anthropology is studied through its various Sub-disciplines such as Physical Anthropology, Pre-historic Archaeology, Social and Cultural Anthropology. While these branches appear to be specialized areas there is a thematic unity in them.
I am very happy to report that the members of the faculty and the Research Associates took the challenge and conducted 8 different field works relating to their individual research projects. The work was done on a war footing. Late Dr. P.K. Parmar studied ethno social profile of Gaddis-a tribal population of Himachal Pradesh (Dharamsala and around). In his study he included Anthropometry, Demographic structure, Nutritional status, seasonal migrations and the Social structure with observations on the changing patterns. Prof. B.G. Banerjee conducted field studies in colloboration with late Prof. Krishan Sharma on health status and prevalence of diseases in Solan District of Himachal Pradesh. Their report provides data on the trends of morbidity, fertility, mortality and maternal child health care. In addition Dr. Banerjee has also studied the alternative system of medicine and health care in urban milieu. The Department has been known for Palaeoanthropological studies. Prof.. R.N. Vashisht and Prof. Rajan Gaur conducted intensive research work in the Siwalik belt and the adjoining terraces between Ramsher in North-east and Kala Amb in the South-west. They collected large number of fossils and also about fifty stone tools. They have discovered some new Pre-historic archaeological sites for further detailed exploration. Dr. John Mao, Research Associate, (Social Anthropology) concentrated on studying the elderly in the districts of Dharampur (H.P.) and Ropar (Punjab). The data collected by him provide valuable information on the social and health aspects of the aged. TheDepartment has been conducting pioneering work in child growth studies in different populations since the early 60's. Carrying this work further, Dr. (Miss) Gayathiri Pathmnanathan, (Physical Anthropology) studied skeletal maturation and physical growth of a large number of children using hand-wrist radiography and Auxological Anthropometry. This work assumes significance in the fact that child growth is a very sensitive process and reflects the socio economic conditions. My work relates to Clinical Auxology. In this I have presented brief reports of referred patients of short stature, precocious puberty, childhood obesity, diabetic children, Chromosomal disorders and some other chronic diseases. Since it is important to understand the relationship of biological maturity and body size, preliminary findings are also presented.
