The mid-eighteenth century began with the Marathas as the paramount power in India, and in the next two decades, they rose in power and prestige. In the Carnatic, Bengal, Rajputana, Malwa, Bundelkhand they were supreme, and in Delhi, the Marathas ruled while the Mughal king reigned. In this period when Nanasaheb Peshwa was at the helm, the Maratha power reached its zenith. But that was not the entire story.
The events of the mid-eighteenth century are pivotal, and determined the course of the next five decades. The rise of the Europeans in the south and the east added a new dimension, so that this epoch eventually emerged as the crossroad of Indian history. This book narrates that engrossing story.
Dr. Uday S. Kulkarni has authored seven non-fiction books dealing with eighteenth century Indian history over the last fourteen years, namely; 'Solstice at Panipat', "The Era of Bajirao', 'Bakhar of Panipat', 'The Extraordinary Epoch of Nanasaheb Peshwa', 'The Maratha Century' and 'The Mastery of Hindustan: Triumphs & Travails of Madhavrao Peshwa' which cover the period from the late seventeenth century onwards. And a richly illustrated book based on the work of the Scottish artist James Wales has examined western India of late eighteenth century - through the eyes of this painter - in James Wales: Artist & Antiquarian in the time of Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao'. Many of his books have been translated into Marathi.
The present work is a standalone book that deals with the time of Nanasaheb Peshwa. With many unpublished documents and maps being printed for the first time, it would satisfy the lay and the academic reader.
Dr. Kulkarni is a Surgeon. He has served in the Indian Armed Forces and proceeded on voluntary retirement in the rank of Surgeon Commander. He has received many awards for his work on Maratha and Indian history. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He works and lives in Pune with his family.
