Anthropology means the science of man. Anthropology studies man holistically, that is, from the physical as well as socio-cultural angles. The present volume is a basic tool for the students of anthropology, especially social anthropology deals with aim and scope or the horizon of social anthropology with its methodology. The scope of social anthropology extends from the primitive phase of man to contemporary developments in human society and their problems. The basic unit of observation for a social anthropologist is group behaviour which starts from the family. The theoretical part and application of anthropological knowledge in the field primarily depend on intensive fieldwork which serves as the laboratory for an anthropologist. The application of anthropological knowledge in the various socio-cultural situations is often found helpful even in developmental programmes, for which the anthropologist may be called as the social doctor.
In connection with the writing of the present study, the authors are indebted to Sri Biswanath Banerjee, Reader, Department of Anthropology, Calcutta University for his valuable suggestions and Kumari Shanta Bala of Jagdalpur, for her neat typing work.
