About the Book This book contain General Frederick Young was the first commandant of the Sirmur Battalion, later known as the Second Gurkha Rifles, in the British Indian Army. His distinguished military career in India is captured in the book "The Life-Story of One of the Old Brigade in India: 1786-1874, Including Reminiscences of Ireland and of India in the Fifties" by L. Hadow Jenkins. The book details Young's experiences and contributions to the British military efforts in India, as well as his personal recollections of Ireland and 19th-century India.

About the Author L. Hadow Jenkins, (born in 1834), authored the biography of General Frederick Young, the first commandant of the Sirmur Battalion (Second Gurkha Rifles). His work highlights Young's military achievements in India and offers a glimpse into British military life during the 19th century, capturing historical insights and personal anecdotes of the era.

Preface It is quite necessary that anyone who wishes to understand these sketches should read preface and prologue. The original idea in writing the sketches sprang from my wish to leave to my great-grandchildren a record of my Father's services to his country as well as a sketch of his personal charm and character; and this idea has persisted throughout, and accounts for the varied audience I seem to address when I consider the children-as they are and the mature readers-as they may be in the future. In the years that intervene through the story of my Father's active life I have included personal experiences which may be of interest as they give true pictures of some vanished scenes and of some memorable days in the early part of my own life. The prologue is a portion of this preface for it tells how, in my old age, I try to pay a tribute to undying memories.
