This investigation was undertaken in December 1955 on behalf of the Research Programme Committee, Planning Commission, New Delhi. The actual field-work was done in three villages upto June 1956 and in Wadi and Vasti it was carried out from December 1956 to March 1957. We are grateful to the Research Programme Committee for the grant. We record our gratefulness to all the persons of the villages studied. Without their co-operation the investigation could not have succeeded. Our thanks are also due to Prof. A. R.
