Preface The visible world has enough temptations for the ever-hungry senses, and beyond that there is the mind! The mind that is unrestrained by the reins of the senses, more often a foe than a friend. The illusion of finding happiness through the senses lingers, even though these temptations surpass the capacity of the senses. And so it goes, the never-ending saga of the cycle of birth and death. Adding to the already melodramatic saga are power, position, politics, and geopolitics, leaving little for the underprivileged. Despite this, the potent illusion of happiness affects young and old, rich and poor alike. A deluded mind sunk in the ocean of illusion, endures endless pain dreaming about the pleasures it hopes to experience in the time to come! Despite the prevalence of pain, pleasure, loneliness, and fear in every social class, the desire for happiness never fades. Can one become free from anxiety, fear and remain calm and firm regardless of the situation? Can one really experience love in its truest form? Is there a definite way to overcome suffering, sorrow, loneliness and stay calm and confident and have the clarity to sail through troubled waters and achieve your dreams? The unquestioning acceptance of the hollowness of the world and its purported delights exposes the shallowness of the mind. Just as one uses a hand to pick up an object, similarly one uses the mind to think.

Prologue The Purusharthas: The Fourfold Aim of Existence. "The Vedas deal with the three modes of material nature, O Arjun. Rise above the three modes to a state of pure spiritual consciousness. Freeing yourself from dualities, eternally fixed in truth, and without concern for material gain and safety, be situated in the self." "There is no one who can remain without action, even for a moment. Indeed, all beings are compelled to act by their qualities born of material nature (the three guņas)." Ignorance of the consequences of actions trigger karmic en-tanglements, accumulating throughout one's life. Embodied beings are enslaved by ignorance, which Sanatana Dharma identifies as the root cause of the cycles of pleasure and pain.
