Our heritage manifests not merely as practices or performances, but as embodiments of parampara the unbroken flow of knowledge and aesthetic wisdom transmitted from generation to generation. Retention of this sutra, safeguarding this lineage, is our dharma, for that sustains the world, and sol say "संस्कृतेन धार्यत लोक.
This sustenance was modelled as 'guru-shishya parampara the oral transmission of scientific dynamics as well as cosmic Truth embodied in experience manifold in performing arts, ritual frameworks, the calculation of planetary positions for traditional almanacs, casting metals or making images, and many more. Knowing this is to erase the ignorant divide between this is "art/s", and that is not, rather perceiving everything as the emanation of that eternal truth- Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram!
When UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), it articulated at the global level what India has long cherished: that humanity's Irving traditions must be protected, honoured, and revitalised. India ratified the Convention in 2005, recognising its consonance with our own cultural philosophy, and emerging as one of its most active participants. Inscriptions of our nation's elements on the Representative List are thus part of a larger civilizational dialogue an affirmation of India's contribution to world heritage and a reiteration of our belief in 'वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् - the world citizenry is our revered guest.
Each inscribed element, whether Yoga, Ramman, Durga Pua in Kolkata, or Garba, cames within it the imprint of generations of practitioners. Their steadfast dedication, often nurtured in quiet comers of our villages and towns, is what enables these traditions to shine on the global stage. This publication rightfully honours these torchbearers of heritage, for they are the living vessels of India's cultural resilience.
Sangeet Natak Akademi, as the national academy for the performing arts, has long championed these dynamic cultural expressions. Through its programmes, fellowships, research initiatives, and community outreach, the Akademi has remained steadfast in its mandate to support, safeguard, and celebrate India's intangible heritage. And the designation of the Akademi as the nodal agency of UNESCO activities echoes perfectly with its engagements.
