Forewprd
Dr. Suryanath U.Karnath, a well known historian and researcher, has authored several books on History of Karnataka and Freedom Movement. In this concise volume Dr. Kamath has dealt with "India's Struggle for Freedom" very effectively drawing from the standard works of both Indian and foreign historians of repute. Dr. Kamath has this to say about the role of Mahatma Gandhi and Non-Cooperation Movement. The leadership of Mahatma Gandhi gave a definite turn to the freedom, movement in India. It was he who made nonviolence struggle a creed of the Congress, and like the Extremists, the attainment of complete freedom its goal, Gujarat and a wide followers of Jainism. The idea of 'Ahimsa' or 'Non-violence' was thus a part of his mental make-up. His mother Putalibai was an intense devote of God and Gandhiji inherited this devotion to God from her. Narasi Bhagat's "Vaishnava janato" a devotional poem became his guiding stuff. He had developed a deep compassion for the poor and the lowly, though he was born in an affluent family of Dewan or 'Prime Minister' of a Princely state. He was influenced by the 'Bhagavad Gita' and the writings of Tolstoy and Ruskin (Ruskin's teaching to take care of the poorest in society, well expressed in the term 'Unto the Last' fascinated Gandhi. He coined the word 'Sarvodaya' from this).... Though most of the Revolutionaries committed violence; they did not do it for the sake of violence. They were not dacoits and criminals.

Preface
I had the good fortune of basking in the sunshine of nationalism, as in the small town of my birth, out family was involved in freedom movements in its own small way. As a boy of five. I used to join the procession of boys which was shouting "Quit India". As a student of history, I developed special fascination for the subject as it was in this grand movement that common man was the hero. The movement showed us the way of finding solutions to our problems, or at least how to fight for their solution. Gandhiji showed the way and was also one trumpeter who could make the cause of nationalism heard in the nooks and comers of the country despite many sound-braking odds. I had special appeal for the revolutionaries who held the country dearer to them than their own life. I have interviewed 850 freedom fighters of Karnataka and published their accounts in three, volumes in Kannada ("Swatantrya Sangramada Smritigalu" between 1974 and 1980). I have thus smelt the earth of the trench. This is better expressed in my book. "Quit India Movement in Karnataka" written due to the urgings of Dr. R.R.Divakarji. Of course, as a teacher, I have taught the subject at the post-graduate level. The books I had studied are presented in the Bibliography. But what is presented here is only a limited picture. I am thankful to all who are responsible for this publication.

Introduction
"Youth are the salt of our nation. If salt were to lose savour wherewith shall it be stated?" asked, the Father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Youth of our country of any country for that matter, should know the history of the nation. This is more so in the case of a country like ours, which after a glorious past, lapsed into subordination, and after a sustained struggle for more than a century got back Independence. Unless the knowledge of the struggle and sacrifice the forefathers made for them to enjoy freedom is not provided to them, they may not be able to live meaningfully. With a view to helping youngsters know the essential facts of India's struggle for freedom. Dr. H.K.Ranganath, the former Honorary Director, requested Dr. Suryanath U.Kamath, a well-known historian and specialist in the history of freedom struggle to write a concise history of India's struggle for freedom having the youth as the readers. a complete Dr. Kamath has done comprehensive job in the scope he was given. and The Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values is grateful to Dr. Kamath for this favour. We are thankful to Dr. Raja Ramanna our beloved Chairman, for his appropriate Foreword. Sri V.Ganesha for typesetting. Sreeranga Printers as usual, have done a good job of printing. I thank them and other who helped us.
