About The Book

Our country is what it is today all thanks to the sacrifice and courage our fearless war heroes have shown when we were under threat. Some of them may have lost their lives, but their lives did not go in vain. Today we celebrate these martyrs and the real heroes without whom, our lives would have been under constant threat. Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, PVC (1 July 1933-10 September 1965), was an Indian Army soldier who posthumously received India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra, for his actions during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Cariappa was promoted to the substantive rank of lieutenant-colonel on 17 July 1946. The same year, he was promoted to Brigadier of the Frontier Brigade Group. It was during this time that Colonel Ayub Khan - later Field Marshal and President of Pakistan, 1962-1969-served under him. Sam Manekshaw was born in 1914 into a distinguished Parsi family in Amritsar of Punjab to Dr. Hormusji Manekshaw, who has served the British Army as a medical officer during the First World War, and Heerabai. He had three brothers and two sisters and they inherited from their parents a deep sense of honor, honesty and humor. This is a major work of historical research. It will be indispensable to historians and sociologists, as well as to students and the Indian army.

Preface

Take a look at India's history and you'll realise that we have never attacked a country first. Unfortunately, we have been subjected to war on a number of occasions. India's armed forces have kept the invaders out and in the process, many brave sons of the soil have had to make the ultimate sacrifice to keep the country safe.

Hamid joined the army in December 1954, and was posted to the 4th Battalion of the Grenadiers regiment. During the War, his battalion participated in the battle of Namka Chu against the People's Liberation Army. During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, the 4 Grenadiers battalion was entrusted with a vital position before the village of Chima on the Khem Karan-Bhikhiwind line. At the Battle of Asal Uttar on 9-10 September 1965, Hamid destroyed six Pakistani tanks and was killed during an engagement with a seventh.

Cariappa was promoted to the substantive rank of lieutenant-colonel on 17 July 1946. The same year, he was promoted to Brigadier of the Frontier Brigade Group. It was during this time that Colonel Ayub Khan - later Field Marshal and President of Pakistan, 1962-1969 served under him. In 1947, Cariappa was the first Indian who was selected to undergo a training course at Imperial Defence College, Camberly, UK on the higher directions of war. During the traumatic period of partition, he handled the division of the Indian Army and sharing of its assets between Pakistan and India, in a most amicable, just and orderly manner. He was then the Indian officer in charge of overseeing the transition..
