Book Description
Preface
The Cultural advancement of any civilization is based on the value-system created by the concerned people them-selves. Among the ancient civilizations of the world, the development of Indian philosophy gave a sense of values, which has lasted several millennia. And our survival is in no small way due to these value systems. Our later expression of philosophy, art and sciences also originates from these ancient value systems. They have been excellently brought out in this collection of sayings by the Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values. The Centre has taken up several projects of research and publication of the salient features of the old masters, whose work is brought to the fore in the Students' Interface programme. Vedic India prescribed an ennobling life style, the salient features of which are worthy of deep study even in the modern times. It aimed at perfection through secular yet catholic, spiritual yet practical and ideal yet achievable phases of value based living. With this backdrop, the old literary masters, sages and savants need to be rediscovered with an eye for their contemporary relevance. The works of Manu, Yajnavalkya, Parashara, Brihaspati, Valmiki, Vyasa and Kautilya to mention only a few, need to be studied again for their solutions to the ills of contemporary times. In any case, our youth need to be made aware, of the thought process of the great masters. The Present booklet entitled "Indian Thought on Human Values", painstakingly documented by Prof. Pandurangi and Vid. Ganapati Rajagopala Sharma will, I am sure, be yet invaluable for the students. I am grateful to these scholars for the compilation and preparation of this work.

Foreword
The little volumes on INDIAN THOUGHT ON HUMAN VALUES were prepared by the statesmen and renowned scholars in their respective fields like Prof. K.T.Pandurangi, Vid. S.Rajagopala Sharma on 'Indian Thought on Human Values', 'Mukundamälä of Kulashekhara Älwär - translation by Dr. Raja Ramanna, 'Shivänanadalahari of Adi Shankara' -translation by Dr. C.V.Sundaram and 'Human Values in Telugu Literature with reference to Vemana by Shatavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh. Each title on Human Values of this book was prepared for our Book-pack series titled "Book-pack for the Young", researched and published by Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values, Bengaluru, during the 1990s. The Indian Thought on Human Values contains 15 chapters; they are: The beginning of Man's moral personality, Moral discipline and the Moderation of emotions, The concept of Dharma, The Social institutions that enforce Moral values, The King and the Government, The Judicial Ethics, The position of Women in Indian Society, The Role of teachers and students, Man and his Enviornment, Religion and Human Values, The Code of conduct for different vocations, Care of public utility places, Social welfare activities, Remedies to be provided by the King, and General Guidelines for a Good Life. ... The great Bhakti poem of about the 11th Century, "Mukundamälä" or at least a part of it, is usually associated with the Vaishnavite sect of which the celebrated King poet Kulašekhara was one of the twelve original proponents. The sect itself was in the nature of a Hindu reformist movement which rose to its zenith of influence under Sri Ramanujä-charya, the great philosopher of the 11th-12th Century. This movement was later to influence the whole of India....
