Book Description
Preface

This book discusses the various aspects of the Indian economy during colonial rule but it focuses mainly on the industrial development and labour movement from 1850 to 1950. The deindustrialization was one of the major adverse effect of British rule in India therefore, this aspect has also been discussed in this book. Being a colonial power the British were not in favour of India's industrialization. Rather, they tried to keep India industrially a backward country as raw material supplier and consumer of finished British industrial products. Thus, the British colonial policies adversely affected the industrialization of India. But due to certains colonial requirements and compulsions the British allowed the establishment of industries in India since 1850 under their control. Moreover, the compulsions created by the first world war opened the way to industrial development of India. The industrial development of India from 1850 to 1950 has been narrated and analysed in the phase manner. The labour movements originated and developed alongwith the industrial growth. In the course of time the labour movements also contributed to the freedom struggle due to various reasons. The various intricate aspects of labour and trade union movement has also been discussed in this book.

Infact this book is outcome of my research works of last twenty five years. My works on industrial development and labour movement has been embodied in this volume. During this long span of time since 2001 various theories, methodologies and schools of history writings came into being. In India history is a highly debated subject as far as the writing and analysis of Indian history is concerned. Obviously, the research articles, papers and project reports are also influenced with the new trends of history writing. Thus, this volume is contained with the latest disciplinary approaches.

The basic objective of editing this volume is to bring out my all the unpublished project reports and published articles together on the theme of Industrial Development and Labour Movement in India during 1850-1950. Thus, the scattered published and unpublished materials and there has been included in one compact volume, so that these can be available and accessible at one place. This is my firm belief that this volume will be useful to the researchers, text book writers, students and intellectuals.

This volume presents a collection of my works focused on the relationship between industrial development and the labour movement in India during the colonial rule. Therefore, it may also attract the general readers, who are interested in the history of industrial development and labour movement.

The present volume is contained with ten chapters. Chapter one is based on my research project report on industrial Development in India (1850-1950) while chapter two is also an outcome of research project report entitled "A Survey of Labour Movement in India (1850-1950)". Chapter three is on the struggle of tea-plantation coolies and Assam-Bengal Railway strike of 1921.
