पुस्तक परिचय करेह नदी के तट पर स्थित तेसरी नामक गाँव के बाशिन्दे मजदूर, दुकानदार और कारीगर-मिस्त्री आदि के रूप में पड़ोस के भगतपुर के उच्चवर्णीय भूस्वामियों की सेवा करते हुए अपना गुजारा करते हैं। सैकड़ों साल से वहाँ जिन्दगी इसी ढर्रे पर चलती रहती है, इसमें खलल उस दिन पड़ता है जिस दिन रामू हज्जाम, तेसरी गाँव का एक नाई, भगतपुर के मुखिया के हाथों बुरी तरह पीटा जाता है, सिर्फ इसलिए कि दाढ़ी बनाते समय संयोगवश मुखिया का गाल थोड़ा सा कट गया था। अन्याय के खिलाफ गुस्से से उबलता हज्जाम का बेटा, बदला लेने के लिए नदी के उस पार रहस्यमय युवाओं के समूह, जो अपने को माओवादी कहते हैं, से जा मिलता है; फिर घटनाओं का एक ऐसा सिलसिला शुरू होता है जो दो गाँवों के बीच के नाजुक शक्ति सन्तुलन को हमेशा के लिए छिन-भिन्न कर देता है। कुल मिलाकर, रामू का अनकहा दर्द भारत के दूरदराज में गरीबी, गैरबराबरी और जातिगत हिंसा का जीवन्त चित्रण है।

लेखक परिचय 1 जनवरी 1964 को जन्मे ताज हसन 1987 बैच के आईपीएस अधिकारी हैं। वे 2023 में डीजी के पद से सेवानिवृत्त हुए। वे दिल्ली, अरुणाचल प्रदेश, अण्डमान एवं निकोबार और बिहार में विभिन्न पदों पर कार्यरत रह चुके हैं। उन्हें 2005 में राष्ट्रपति सेवामेडल और 2011 में राष्ट्रपति पुलिस मेडल भी प्राप्त हुआ है।

आभार मैं आभारी हूँ शब्बीर हसन का, जिन्होंने बचपन के दिनों से मुझे साहित्यिक जगत् से परिचित कराया। गिरिडीह का, जहाँ मैं रामू हज्जाम से मिला और उसके बारे में महसूस किया। उपमन्यु चटर्जी का, उनके समर्थन व मार्गदर्शन के लिए। अपने बेटे सरमद का, जिसने कई प्रकार से सहयोग दिया। अपनी पत्नी नुजहत का, जिन्होंने यह पुस्तक लिखने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया। मिर्जा अफसर वेग और पंकज झा का उनके सहयोग-सहायता के लिए। पुस्तक में वर्णित स्वप्न महात्मा बुद्ध की जातक कथाओं से लिये गये हैं। पुस्तक की आवश्यकता के अनुरूप उन्हें संशोधित किया गया है। अध्याय 17 में वर्णित 'का करूँ सजनी आए न बालम...' 1977 की बॉलीवुड फिल्म 'स्वामी' से उद्धृत है।

आमुख करेह नदी यों ही बहती रहती साल भर। बरसात के दिनों में पानी से लबालब इसके किनारे इस कदर उमड़ पड़ते कि हाथी तक पार करने की हिम्मत न करे। किन्तु बादलों के छूटने के बाद विशाल रेती में यह नदी एक पतली सी जल-रेखा के समान शान्त भाव से बहती, कहीं तनिक सा रुकती हुई और फिर आगे बढ़ती हुई। लोगों का मानना था, हालाँकि निश्चित कोई भी न था कि यह नदी विंध्य की ऊँचाइयों पर किसी अनजान घाटी से निकलती है। इस बारे में किन्तु सभी एकमत थे कि करेह एक ऐसी जीवन-रेखा है जिसे ईश्वर ने भगतपुर के गाँवों और नदी क्षेत्र तेसरी के लिए इस धरती पर भेजा है। दोनों गाँवों के लोग इसी नदी का पानी पीते थे और उनकी जीवनचर्या इसी नदी के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती थी। आज किसी को याद नहीं कि परिस्थितियाँ कब बदलीं, किन्तु बदलीं, और वह भी इतने घातक और निर्मम तरीके से, दोनों गाँवों के बीच छिड़ी लड़ाई के बाद। यह लड़ाई इतनी भयंकर थी कि प्राणों के भय से लोगों को नदी किनारे जाने तक से डर लगने लगा।
