Bhai Vir Singh, the creator of modern Punjabi literature, took upon himself to provide valuable historical accounts of the Sikh way of life. His three novels - Sundri, Satwant Kaur and Bijai Singh are historical novels and deal with eighteenth century Sikh history.
Baba Naudh Singh, his fourth novel is a saga of spiritual and social transformation brought about by a spiritually awakened, socially alert and morally perfect Sikh-Baba Naudh Singh. It was first serialised in The Khalsa Samachar and later in 1921 published in book form.
This book Jeevan Bhai Sain Dass is an extract from the above. Its Punjabi edition was released in 2008. On repeated requests from the devotees and readers of Bhai Vir Singh the English edition is being published. For their information Bhai Sain Dass was Sangha by caste and brother-in-law of Guru Hargobind - their wives were the daughters of Bhai Narayan Dass. Bhai Sain Dass was not only a relative but also a devotee of the Guru. Due to this intimate and sacred relationship, the Guru often visited Drolli village of Bhai Sain Dass. The Guru left his wife who was in the advanced stage of pregnancy with her sister. It was here that she gave birth to a son. The Guru visited this village several times and stayed here. There are many precious relics of the Guru which have been preserved by the descendants of Bhai Sain Dass in his ancestral Haveli in village Drolli Bhai Ki near the town of Moga in Panjab. Pictures of these are included in the book for the benefit of the readers.
Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan, a literary and cultural organization has not only been publishing Bhai Vir Singh's works but also translating them into English in order to spread his message to his readers at home and abroad.
We hope this monograph based on the English translation of Baba Naudh Singh by Prof. G.S. Talib will help the readers to understand better the Guru's devotees in the Malwa area of Panjab.
