About The Book

The existence of two different and prominent Schools of Styles in Kathak Dance, as the Jaipur and Lucknow Gharanas is an age old tradition in this art form. They bear so many interesting phenomena within their boundaries. Starting from their origin, development, practices, specialities, challenges as well as continuation, both these Gharanas have emerged with their respective distinctions. The book is an attempt to reveal all these factors so that their significance in the field of Kathak Dance practice of present period can be understood. The work has been derived from the extensive research work done on the comparative study of both the Lucknow and Jaipur Gharanas of Kathak Dance, which has been awarded with a Ph.D Degree from the Indira Kala Sangit Viswa Vidyalaya, Khairagarh Chhattisgarh, 2008, under the supervision of Professo Dr. Mandavi Singh.

Introduction

Kathak Dance might have evolved out of the various dance forms, existing in different parts of northern India during different periods. And today it is the classical dance form of northern India. So whenever an attempt is made for the construction of a thorough history of this art form, comparision of its various aspects with that of those already existing forms of different ages, as also vice-versa are done. And thus somehow a lineage is obtained starting from its story-telling origin to that of its present form. And this contemporary form comprises of three different schools of styles or Gharanas; the Jaipur Gharana, Lucknow Gharana and the Banaras Gharana, as they are being called now. This work shall remain confined only to the Jaipur and Lucknow Gharanas of kathak dance and shall unfold the detailed study of these two 'Gharanas' or 'Schools of Styles', gradually, as we proceed with the contents of this whole work. First of all the term Gharana needs an explanation so that a concrete basic concept about this can be developed and projected meaningfully in to further details. Gharana represents a tradition being carried forward either by a certain family descent or by the disciples of a great master or Guru.
