Book Description
iiPreface

Kayachikitsa is the most fertile, viable and vibrant branch of Ashtanga Ayurveda, occupying a central position in Ayurvedic clinical practice. It primarily deals with internal medicine and the holistic management of systemic diseases. The principles of its management are deeply rooted in the profound concepts of Loka-Purusha Samya, Panchamahabhuta, Tridosha, Agni, Ama, and Srotas, reflecting a dynamic understanding of health and disease not merely at the physical level, but encompassing the mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the human being. The understanding of disease diathesis and therapeutic approach in Kayachikitsa is intrinsically connected with other branches of Ayurveda. Today, it is drawing increased attention from academicians, practitioners, and researchers worldwide, as the Ayurvedic perspective on health care and disease management is gaining recognition and relevance. At a time when both Ayurveda and the conventional system of medicine are at the forefront of public health discussions, there is a growing need for a comprehensive exploration of ethics, safety, efficacy, and patient choice. Since the beginning of this century, such discourse has become increasingly important across both systems of medicine.

Very recently, the syllabus of Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine) has been revised by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), New Delhi. At this juncture, there is a strong felt need among the academic fraternity to develop a textbook on Kayachikitsa that addresses the evolving needs of students. This book has been written with a student-centric approach, focusing on the classical aspects of disease management while also incorporating modern perspectives on various diseases to ensure its relevance in contemporary clinical practice. This textbook has been meticulously designed to serve as a comprehensive guide for undergraduate and postgraduate students, Ayurveda practitioners, and scholars. It integrates classical concepts drawn from the Charaka Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, and other authoritative Ayurvedic texts with contemporary clinical interpretations, evidence-based approaches etc.

Kayachikitsa primarily deals with the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of general disorders of the body and mind, based on the principles of homologons (Samanya) and heterologous (Vishesha) therapy To fulfil this objective, it incorporates fundamental principles of treatment through various therapeutic modalities, including bio-purification (Shodhana) Bio-purification is a unique therapeutic approach in Ayurveda, aimed at cleansing the micro- and macro-channels (Srotas) of the body. This is achieved through the five specialized purification procedures collectively known as Panchakarma. These procedures play a central role in restoring internal balance and facilitating the body's natural healing mechanisms.

The entire framework of Ayurvedic therapeutics is built upon the goal of ensuring the harmonious functioning of Agnithe biological fire or metabolic energywithin all bodily systems. The concept of Kaya, often considered synonymous with Agni, is a distinctive feature of Ayurvedic philosophy It signifies the transformative power responsible for the digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients. thereby sustaining health and wellness. As is well understood in the principles of energy dynamics, energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it only transforms from one form to another. In the human body, Kaya (Agni) serves as the vital force that drives all physiological processes. The energy required for these functions is derived from the food we consume and the air we breathe, and it is transformed and distributed throughout the body via various types of Agni (bio-energies). These energies support cellular functions and help maintain the body's internal homeostasis.
