Book Description
About the Book:

This is not a book - it is a cannon with live bombs, all the burning questions of human life in a nutshell. Many did not have the courage to read, many did not have the courage to print; and the government of the time subverted its circulation. The fourth edition appeared after 45 years of silence.

"Epigrams are the salt of literature. The epigramatic form is eminently suitable for recording the concentrated moments of a soul which can live and experience intensely and cannot be adequately replaced by any other form of literary expression. The volume before us consists of epigrams all of them striking and powerfully expressed and displaying great insight and penetration, in exposing the palpable as well as the subtler forms of cant and social hypocrisy and injustice."

Swarajya

"Like Ibsen's epigrams these thoughts make you think desperately. They act like bobs- intellectual bombs, destroying the old fogyism of reactionaries and hypocrites. What it undertakes to do is to make you think and act straight."

Educational Review

"This excellent book of practical epigrams represents an outline of the genius of an exceptionally thought-provoking author."

Current Thought

"This is a book containing epigrams on such subjects of interest as love, marriage, society, politics, religion etc. and these are very striking and thought-provoking. The writer seems to have a real insight and has given much thought to the ordinary problems of life and to have risen above the conventional way of looking at things and holding opinions on them. His remarks are very shrewd, incisive and sometimes well-nigh revolutionary. They are very short, but often suggest a world of thought. It is a very clear work which is well worth reading and keeping."

Morden Review

"It is a book which can thrill and shake your whole existence."

Justice

Prelude:

THOUGHTS might be either out of season or in season; practical thoughts which help to cultivate rational thinking are always in season and have, therefore, an excuse for being recorded at any time without apology. These are the daily human misgivings and they will ever remain so.

If everyone confesses honestly, it may be unanimously said that these life problems are common practical truths theoretically uncommon. There is, of course, much in this book which the orthodox, the so-called intellectual and the hypocrite will strongly resent. There is, at the same time, much that will be hailed by the thinking young-enthusiast, much that will inspire and prepare him for an intellectual revolution.

The object of this little work, however, is to present, even to an imperceptible degree, the other side of truth--that truth which the irresponsible idealists and others of their class have so far succeeded in hiding with countless intellectual apologies.

Most of these epigrams were jotted down during my sojourn in the Western countries (1919-23) and appeared in foreign periodicals at random, while the latter part was compiled after my return to India.
