About the book

Human beings, throughout the world and throughout ages, have been suffering inspite of their ever striving not to suffer. Innumerable techniques have been developed and applied. Various religions also tried to reduce or end human suffering, but the suffering continues. In case one believes that human being is destined to suffer then he will naturally cease resenting suffering, but he ever does resent it.Human being has a natural instinct to live a life in which there is no suffering. What is it that prevents him to let that instinct work?

In the following pages the above problems have been discussed very briefly. The discussion has been divided into nine chapters namely: Human Problems. Traditional ways, human behaviour, art of learning, self-awareness, self-management, motivation, art of living and meditation. Any chapter can be read independently, however it is advisable to go through all chapters chronologically as the matter in all chapters is interrelated.

Preface

Human beings, throughout the world and throughout ages, have been suffering inspite of their ever striving not to suffer. Innumerable techniques have been developed and applied. Various religions also tried to reduce or end human suffering, but the suffering continues. In case one believes that human being is destined to suffer then he will naturally cease resenting suffering, but he ever does resent it. Human being has a natural instinct to live a life in which there is no suffering. What is it that prevents him to let that instinct work?

All parents, all teachers, all political and religious leaders, every body in the world, want and preach that human beings should be good and nobody wants otherwise. Why then are we not good? Why are we creating all this chaos and disorder and killing each other, resulting in continued human suffering? Obviously there must be some thing wrong somewhere in our approach in dealing with life.

In the physical side of life human being has made spectacular progress with tremendous increase in economy and living comforts. However in the psychological side of life there is tremendous degradation, which is expressed by the alarming rise in crimes, violence, corruption, suicides, throughout the world, both in developed and developing countries. The physical progress appears to be inversely proportional to mental health. The overall quality of life appears to be degrading. Why man is so harsh and cruel against man? Why does one behave as he behaves?

If and when one is insensitive to human suffering, when one has his own beliefs and explanation, enquiry ends. The selfish mind, which has decided and bent upon seeking pleasure and avoiding pain, can never be aware of love or affection or joy of living. Such a mind has got to continue to suffer. Such a mind will not understand what ever has been said in the following pages.

All traditional ways, techniques, rituals, prescriptions, having failed to solve human problems and reduce or end human suffering, we importantly and urgently need to enquire, to understand, as to what radical change we need in our approach to deal with life.
