S.N. Goenka, also known as Satya Narayan Goenka, was an Indian businessman who later became a meditation instructor. He was instrumental in spreading Vipassana meditation throughout India and the rest of the world. He chose to dedicate his life to passing on the technique after seeing its transformative power. In the 1960s, he began teaching Vipassana meditation courses in India and rapidly opened meditation centres all across the nation.
Goenka was known for his approachable and straightforward teaching methods. He held that Vipassana meditation was a universal practise that everyone could engage in, regardless of their background or religious affiliation. He also emphasised the useful advantages of meditation, including how it may lower stress, improve mental clarity, and foster greater empathy and compassion.
