The book opens after the third battle of Panipat. What was left in its aftermath was a fragmented Hindustan. When the Marathas were hurtling down an abyss with many potentates rising against them and a raging power struggle at Pune, there came on the scene a sixteen-year-old youth who took over the reins of an unruly realm.
In this book, the journey that Indian history took over the next twelve years has been meticulously constructed from original contemporary sources, creating a coherent narrative of a turbulent time when the nation threatened to fall apart.
Richly illustrated and copiously annotated, the book can justifiably claim to be the authentic chronicle of the decade after 1761. Covering the story of India, from the north to the south, "The Mastery of Hindustan' takes the story of the eighteenth century a step further.
Dr. Uday S. Kulkarni has authored seven non-fiction books dealing with eighteenth century Indian history over the last twelve years; namely, Solstice at Panipat, The Era of Bajirao, Bakhar of Panipat, The Extraordinary Epoch of Nanasaheb Peshwa, The Maratha Century cover the period from the late seventeenth century onwards. And a richly illustrated book based on the work of the Scottish artist James Wales has examined western India of late eighteenth century - through the eyes of this painter - in 'James Wales: Artist & Antiquarian in the time of Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao'.
With 'The Mastery of Hindustan: Triumphs & Travails of Madhavrao Peshwa', the story after the battle of Panipat has been brought out in a richly illustrated form with over thirteen hundred references, seventy-two colour prints, two dozen maps, ten appendices and scores of footnotes. This account, of a period of just a dozen years, takes the reader through the politics as well as the social and military transactions of the time. With many unpublished documents and maps being printed for the first time, it would satisfy the lay and the academic reader.
Dr. Kulkarni is a Surgeon. He has served in the Indian Armed Forces and proceeded on voluntary retirement in the rank of Surgeon Commander. He works and lives in Pune with his family. He hopes to continue the story of the eighteenth century in subsequent books.
