The prosperity of the country not only lies in the natural resources, but also on human resources. India has largest human resources in comparison with other countries. The human resources depend on the health of population. The women who constitute about half of the total population are working both in productive and reproductive spheres, contributing for the economic development of the country. Unfortunately, more than half of them are no or low educated, skill-less involved in unproductive work which is not recognized as economic activity.
Ministry of Labour and employment (2023) revealed that only one-third of women are participating in the employment and less than one fifth of them were in working in public sector. Majority of the female workers are from rural areas and unorganized sectors. The women working in organized sector is low, in comparison with men but contributing significantly to the economy. The women during their pregnancy and after delivery require special attention, support and inputs to retain their health and energy.
Recognising this, the Government has enacted Maternity Benefit Act in 1961 and launched National Maternity Benefit Scheme (NMBS) for the benefit of women working in organized sector to carry out the social function of child bearing and without undue strain on their health and loss of wages. The facility was extended to majority who are working in unorganized sector and latter to all women irrespective of their working status by launching varies programmes for women during their pre-natal, natal and post-natal periods. They include; Janani Suraksha joyana (JSY), Janani Sisu Suraksha Yojana (JSSY) and Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY) and supplemented through the programmes of Ministry of Women Welfare and Child Development. The success of these programmers largely depends on the participation of the target in these programmes. The participation intern depends on their awareness, attitude and extent of their utilization of the provisions for their furtherance. Hence, the present study was undertaken to study the knowledge, attitude and utility of the maternity benefit scheme by the women belonging to different sections so as to expand the programme to reach all women. The information thus generated will be useful in restructuring the progrmme so as to universalize the programme.
