Presently, he serves as the Head of the Department and Assistant Professor in the Department of Missiology at the Gurukul Lutheran Theological College and Research Institute, Chennai. His scholarly pursuits encompass a diverse range of interests, including Intercultural Theology, Comparative Theology, Hindu-Christian-Muslim Dialogue, Appropriation of Religious Beliefs, Intercultural Art, and Comparative Religion, among others. This comprehensive edited volume serves as a resource guide, facilitating a deeper understanding of the intricate scope of missiological inquiry and presents a thorough examination of methodological issues, research design, diverse perspectives, and practical approaches, essential for comprehending the complexities inherent in contemporary Christian mission endeavours.

Foreword

The recent trends in missiological discourses in academia and mission studies in universities, research centers, and institutes show emergence of newer nuances, understanding and methodological postures. Such trends have brought about further challenges of methodological questions in terms of contextual relevance and universal significance. Indeed, the students and researchers of mission studies in contemporary academia are exposed to the sea of missiological discourses. However, there are still great challenges in appropriating the ever-evolving new realities of societal and ecclesial life to missional theological discourse. Perhaps, the traditional imperialistic mission approach and methodological posture of mission is still evidently visible despite mission at and from being brought out as an alternative paradigm for studying mission and doing mission. Coming to the very basic practical level of mission studies and research, the young students and researchers of theological colleges and seminaries, particularly in India, encounter a scarcity of resources to begin with their mission-theological reflection and carry out new research.

In such a trend and situation such as these, the complied book of twenty four essays, Research Methodological Issues and Design in Missiology by Dr. Vinod S. Sailus and the Gurukul students of Missiology Department comes as a guiding light of scholarly exploration to the students and the beginner scholars and researchers of Mission. The essays in the book present rich expositions and insights on the complexities and challenges of global and local Mission trends covering theological frameworks, methodological distinctions, historical trajectories, and contemporary challenges. The book in precision and insight, take the readers to a scholarly journey to the interdisciplinary nature of Missiological research. The introductory chapters of the book explain the dynamic interplay between theology, history, anthropology, social justice and Mission studies which pave the way exploring the critical importance of methodological relevancy towards understanding the intricate dimensions of Christian Mission. Each chapter in the book presents Missiological inquiry offering fresh perspectives and thought-provoking reflections on the ever-evolving nature of Mission studies. The essays in common critique the deep-rooted Eurocentricmission narratives and challenge the conventional mission wisdom and advocate for the strengthening of indigenous voices in doing mission from the perspective of peoples at the margins. The interdisciplinary nature of Missiological research is vividly portrayed throughout the book with exploration of methodological challenges and proposal for inclusivity and transformative approaches to Mission studies.

In nutshell, the book, Methodological Issues and Research Design in Missiology exemplifies a commitment to an intellectual thirst for mission theological inquiry and exploration. It demonstrates and claims Missiology as the cornerstone of theological inquiry by tracing its historical roots and emphasizing its inter-disciplinary nature and integrative role of mission studies. I see the book, not as mere compilation of fragment articles but well weaved resourceful companion to mission study, particularly for the students of mission to understand the ever-evolving methodological issues and prepare research designs. I wish the book will serve as a handy resource for theological reflection and doing praxis-oriented inclusive Mission in local contexts.

Introduction

Research in Missiology is an elaborate task that requires a comprehensive understanding of various concepts, methodologies, and issues that are integral in the study of Christian Mission. As the global context continues to evolve, the need for rigorous and relevant research in Missiology becomes ever more critical and challenging. In this milieu, the book: Methodological Issues and Research Design in Missiology seeks to provide an overview of the foundational aspects of 'Methodological Issues' and 'Research Design' in Missiology, exploring key concepts, methodologies, and emerging perspectives that shape scholarly inquiry in this field. At the heart of Methodological Issues and Research Design in Missiology lie fundamental concepts that reinforce the study of Christian Mission. The articles in this volume covers theological, historical, sociological, and anthropological dimensions, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of missiological inquiry by carefully examining the present-day Indian society and the global need of Missiologizing in perspectives. From the concept Mission Dei to the historical trajectories of Mission movements, the contributing authors travel through a diverse collection of concepts that enlighten our understanding of Mission dynamics and paradigms.

Methodological Issues and Research Design in Missiology comprehends a diverse range of methodological approaches adapted to investigate Mission phenomena across different contexts. From qualitative methods such as ethnography and case studies to quantitative techniques like surveys and statistical analysis, the authors employ a range of tools to gather data, analyse findings. and draw meaningful conclusions. Moreover, interdisciplinary collaborations with scholars from fields such as anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies enrich methodological diversity and deepen the understanding of Mission practices and impacts; connecting ethical, epistemological, and practical issues fundamental to the Methodological Issues and Research Design in Missiology. Ethical considerations include ensuring the dignity and agency of research participants, respecting cultural sensitivities, and promoting transparency and integrity in data collection and dissemination. Epistemologically, the authors grapple with questions of knowledge production, bias, and subjectivity, striving for methodological rigor and reflexivity. Moreover, the book highlights practical issues such as limitations of funds, access to research sites, and language barriers, which pose challenges that researchers must address in designing and conducting their studies.

Emerging perspectives in Missiological research offer innovative frameworks for addressing contemporary challenges and advancing theoretical and practical insights. These perspectives involve critical, contextual, postcolonial, and feminist approaches that cross-examine power dynamics, privilege indigenous voices, and deconstruct dominant narratives in Mission discourse. By embracing diverse perspectives, the authors of the articles contribute to a more refined understanding of Mission phenomena and promote inclusive and transformative engagement with the complexities of global Mission contexts. Thus, Methodological Issues and Research Design in Missiology is a dynamic and multidimensional initiative that requires careful consideration of concepts, methodologies, issues, and perspectives. By engaging with these foundational aspects, the authors contribute to the ongoing dialogue within Missiology, fostering scholarly inquiry that is both rigorous and relevant to the diverse contexts and challenges of Christian Mission in the contemporary world.
