Book Description
About The Book

Music documents encoded in digital formats have rapidly been increasing in number with the advances in computer and network technologies. Managing large collections of these documents can be difficult and this has consequently motivated research towards computer-based music information retrieval (MIR) systems.

The present book provides a comprehensive analysis of the diverse aspects of music information retrieval. Besides narrating the applications and opportunities of MIR systems it also discusses the challenges and issues confronted by them. Preface

The origin of music information retrieval (MIR) systems are in manual collections of incipits, short melodic fragments obtained from the beginning of pieces of music. The collections were manually complied by researchers or librarians, and usually covered one narrow field of music Technological achievements in the past few years changed. the way music is stored and created. Use of the new technologies increased opportunities to enjoy music- through digital recording, distribution over the Internet, even the ability to make our own compact discs at home.

Music documents encoded in digital formats have rapidly been increasing in number with the advances in computer and network technologies Managing large collections of these documents can be difficult and this has consequently motivated research towards computer-based MIR systems. Music documents encompass documents that contain any music-related information such as music recordings, musical scores, manuscripts or sketches and so on. Many studies have been carried out in using the music- related information contained in these documents for the development of content-based MIR systems. Such systems retrieve music documents based on information such as the incipits, themes and instrument families. However, most of these content-based IR systems are still research prototypes Music IR systems that are currently in widespread use are systems that have been developed using meta-data such as file-names, titles and catalogue references.

The present book provides a comprehensive analysis of the diverse aspects of music information retrieval. Besides narrating the applications and opportunities of MIR systems it also discusses the challenges and issues confronted by them This work will serve a highly useful and authoritative reference tool not only for teachers and students of music but also for all general readers who are interested in music.
