Ashtangas were the eight clinical branches mentioned in the classics of Ayurveda. Almost all the ancient treatise had followed a sequence of narrating the topics and volumes to facilitate practice of these clinical specialties. The subject 'Roga Nidana' was a relatively newer branch that was added to the Institutional academic curriculum. The intention was to familiarize students with the basic principles of pathogenesis and the description of specific diseases under general medicine in Ayurveda as a separate subject. Besides, it deals with clinical examination techniques and the methodology of Ayurvedic diagnosis. Hence, the references related to topics coming under this subject are not limited to a single volume or few chapters of any of the classical texts. The principles or constructs of disease pathogensis unique to Ayurveda are scattered across the entire stretch of any given Samhita ranging from Sutrasthana to Chikitsasthana. Nidanasthana of the respective Samhitas by Brhattrayees do describe the diseases in detail, but they are not all-inclusive. Thus, no single volume or chapter of Brhattryees or Laghutrayees would furnish all the references required for learning the subject. This has been a major problem for the students as well as the teachers to gather the relevant references across the classical textbooks. Many textbooks have been published in last two decades to facilitate this need.
The revised curriculum introduced by NCISM in 2021 recommends the implementation of novel teaching and learning practices. The curriculum envisages clinical oriented learning of Ayurveda right from the first year subjects itself. At the same time, efforts have been made to encourage students to be acquainted to Samhitas through various activities and selflearning techniques. The sequence of topics in the revised syllabus of Roga Nidan evam Vikriti Vigyan has been rearranged to facilitate clinically oriented learning of this subject. In addition, few explanatory notes by the commentators of classics have been introduced to give clarity to the concepts dealt under the subject. This book was an attempt to support learners by compiling the bare shlokas from the classics on each topic, along with the explanation by the respective commentators wherever necessary.
