About the Author Dr. B.V.Sreekantan is presently Chairman, Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values and Hon. Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru. After obtaining M.Sc. degree in Physics from the University of Mysore, he joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research(TIFR), Bombay and obtained his Ph.D. from the Bombay University in 1954. Over a period of 44 years at the TIFR, he carried out experimental research in Cosmic Rays, High Energy Physics and High Energy Astronomies and published over 200 papers. He was Director of TIFR during 1975-87 and Indian National Academy Srinivasa Ramanujan Professor during 1987-92. He was Visiting Scientist/Visiting Professor at several universities in the US and Japan. He joined the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in 1992 as Dr. Radhakrishnan Visiting Professor and was Senior Homi Bhabha Fellow during 1995-97. His current interests are in the field of Philosophy of Science, in particular of Scientific and Philosophical Studies on Consciousness. He is editing the work, "Foundations of Sciences" under PHISPC Project. He is author of several books. His Book "Philosophy of Science" is published by Bhavan's Gandhi Centre. He is Fellow of all the three science academies in India viz., Indian Academy of Science, Indian National Science Academy(INSA) and National Academy of Science. He has received many coveted professional awards. He is a recipient of 'Padma Bhushan Award by Rashtrapati, the Rajyotsava Award and Sir M. Visvesvaraya Award by the Govt of Karnataka and the Jawaharlal Nehru National Award by the M.P. Government.

Preface It gives us great pride in bringing out this monograph on Dr. Raja Ramanna, one of our top scientists who was greatly responsible in putting India on the world map of nuclear energy capability. As rightly described by Prof. B.V.Sreekantan, Dr. Raja Ramanna was a rare combination of a scientist, technologist, an administrator, a philosopher, musician and musicologist. Above all, he was humane and a thorough gentleman. Dr. Raja Ramanna was the Founder Chairman of our Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values for a decade and a half and a Member of Executive Committee of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai. As if symbolizing the three streams of the triveni sangama of Dr. Raja Ramanna's pursuits, viz., science, philosophy and music, our Bhavan's Gandhi Centre and the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan have published his highly popular and respected works, (1) Elements of Nuclear Power (jointly with Dr.L.V.Krishnan), (2) Mukundamala and Shivanandalahari (English rendering; with Dr.C.V.Sundaram) and (3) The Structure of Music in Raga and Western systems. The present monograph "Nuclear Scientist, Dr. RAJA RAMANNA - His Life and Work" includes a reprint of Dr. B.V.Sreekantan's article on Dr. Raja Ramanna in Biogra-phical Memoirs of Fellows, volume 28, 2005, published by Indian National Science Academy(INSA), New Delhi. To enhance the usefulness of this book as also to make it more informative we have included (i) two articles by Dr. Raja Ramanna himself which appeared in the magazine DILIP and Bhavan's Journal; (ii) noted columnist and musician Dr. Shakuntala Narasimhan's article published in the Sunday Observer; and (iii) an article by the Carnatic vocalist, Vidwan N.R. Prashanth.
