Nyayarahasya is a commentary by Ramabhadra Särvabhauma on Chapters I-IV of Nyayasūtra-s of Gautama, while Ānvikşikītattva- vivaraņa is a commentary by Janakinātha Cudamani, the father of Ramabhadra Sarva- bhauma on Chapter V of Nyayasūtra-s. These impor. tant commentaries are being published for the first time in the Bibliotheca Indica series.
Prabal Kumar Sen (1946-) is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calcutta. His main area of interest is Nyaya, Vaiśeşika, Pūrva Mimāmsā, Buddhism and Vedanta. He has previously edited a number of hitherto unpublished texts of Nyaya Philosophy like Akhyata- vādavyākhyā and Moksavāda of Ramabhadra Sarvabhauma, and he also has to his credit several research articles published in different journals, festschrifts and commemorative volumes.
I have great pleasure in presenting to the world of scholars the present volume on "Nyayasūtras with Nyayarahasya of Ramabhadra Särvabhauma and Ānvikşikıtattvavivaraņa of Janakinātha Cudāmaņi" critically edited by Professor Prabal Kumar Sen. The present publication will be in two volumes. The first volume comprises the Introduction and the text of Nyayarahasya by Ramabhadra Sarvabhauma on Nyāyasūtras Chapter I-IV. The second volume would contain the text of Änvikşikıtattvavivaraņa of Janakinātha Cüdāmaņi on Nyayasūtras, Chapter V with textual notes and appendices.
Nyayarahasya (NR) and Änvikşikitattvavivarana (ANTV) are two commentaries on the Nyayasūtra-s (NS) ascribed to Akşapāda Gotama. NR, a work by Ramabhadra Sarvabhauma, covers chapters I-IV of NS, while ANTV, a work by Janakinātha Cudāmaņi, covers Chapter V of NS. It may be noted here that Jänakinātha Cudāmaņi was the father of Ramabhadra Särvabhauma. It is not known for certain as to why the father and the son collaborated for writing two such commentaries, none of which covers NS in its entirety. Taken together, however, NR and ANTV form a complete work, and in the complete manuscripts of these works that are available, NR is followed by ANTV, the pagination being continuous. Accordingly, both these works have been placed together in this edition, which happens to be the first edition of NR and ANTV. Some manuscripts of these works were noticed and described by Prof. D.C. Bhattacharya in his epoch-making historical work Vange Navya-Nyaya Carca (Bangiya Sahitya Parishat, Calcutta, 1952), but a proper edi- tion of these two works could not be prepared, since the only complete manuscript available at that time, which was de- posited at Sarasvati Bhavana Library, Varanasi was full of scribal errors (Prof. Bhattacharya described it as aśuddhira akara', i.e. mine of inaccuracies), while the three other available manuscripts deposited at the Asiatic Society, Cal- cutta, and Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune, were incomplete.
