Book Description
Back of the Book
'Beyond the delicious stories from "insiders", this book also holds great value for those aspiring for a career in the diplomatic service. ... From the quotidian details about the day-to-day lives in an international posting to the constant pressures of being on one's toes during contingencies of national interest, this book provides a brilliant glimpse into the kind of lives they can expect to lead ... this fascinating anthology is sure to enthral all those who want a flavour of the diplomatic life.

About the Book
Beyond the glamour of the Indian Foreign Service and the glitz of foreign postings lies an unseen world, that of the spouses of diplomats. These women and a few men traverse continents and cultures every few years, raising families in unfamiliar lands, and always upholding the unwritten but unbreakable code-no diplomatic gaffes!

In this anthology edited by Jayshree Misra Tripathi, the spouses, and in a few cases other family members, have their say. They recount historic, entertaining and always intriguing episodes from their lives. The stories are as much an exploration of the diverse cultures around the world-from Sikkim to Ethiopia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tajikistan, Baghdad, China, Switzerland and more-as they are behind-the-scenes accounts of family life and how world-altering moments are often experienced, even created.

The Other Side of Diplomacy is a book not only for those aspiring to a career in the diplomatic service, but for anyone interested in world cultures and slice-of-life family stories (and from within a High Commission or Embassy at that).

About the Author
JAYSHREE MISRA TRIPATHI is a poet and retired diplomatic spouse. She draws on wells of experience, including six and a half decades spent in different pockets of the world-from her childhood in Cuttack, Odisha to England, then Sri Lanka, Madagascar and beyond. The human experience in all its difficulty and moments of grace, and the voices of women often silenced or overlooked, take centre stage in her work. Her poems and short stories have been reviewed in Sahitya Akademi's journal Indian Literature and featured in national and international anthologies.

Foreword
The 'other side of diplomacy' is what this book promises the reader, and I, for one, was not disappointed.

Reading the synopsis or the cover, you'd be forgiven for assuming that this is a book that confines itself merely to describing the lived experiences of diplomatic families. However, as you tread through this compendium of fascinating perspectives, you'll soon realise that you're entering a realm that transcends such a simple summary. One of the most captivating things about the stories in this volume is how they are peppered with deeply personal insights, unique to the authors, which make them both more meaningful and readable.

Preface
For far too long, the 'voices' of diplomatic spouses have remained unsung. Whilst traversing continents and cultures, supporting our spouses and Missions, raising families in unfamiliar lands, with little or no peer support, we may never forget that there is an unwritten code of conduct-to never embarrass our country or inadvertently cause a diplomatic gaffe or incident.

For many of us who have lived and thrived in difficult or remote postings, in a pre-internet era, there is now a sense of pride and self-assurance that comes from having met or exceeded expectations, having forged connections and representing our wonderful, diverse country overseas. However, there is also a very real sense of having had to put one's own life on pause, even of dismissing one's voice with the official persona. We may be considered 'diplomatic baggage', according to one international best-seller (which I thoroughly enjoyed), but the truth is, there is a lot that goes into this unsung, unofficial role.
