The NEP 2020 replaces the National Education Policy of 1986. In January 2015, a committee under former Cabinet Secretary TSR Subraminian started the consultation process for the New Education Policy. Based on the committee report, in June 2017, the draft NEP was submitted in 2019 by a panel led by former Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan. The Draft New Education Policy (DNEP) 2019, was later released by MHRD, followed by a number of public consultations. The Draft NEP was 484 pages. The Ministry undertook a rigorous consultation process in formulating the draft policy: "Over two lakh suggestions from 2.5 lakh gram panchayats, 6,600 blocks, 6,000 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), 676 districts were received."
The NEP 2020 has been formulated based on the foundational pillars of Access, Quality, Equity, Affordability and Accountability. The revised policy is aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It focuses on remoulding India into a global knowledge superpower by making school education more holistic, multidisciplinary, flexible, suited to 21st-century requirements and aimed at bringing out the individual capabilities of each student.
In the light of the above, the several higher education institutions began to conduct several debates, deliberations, conferences and seminars etc., The present book is also an outcome of the National Seminar on National Education Policy2020: Pathway for the Transformation of Higher Education- Status, Challenges and Strategies Organised by the Women's Studies Centre, Sri Padmavati Mahila Visva Vidyalayam, Tirupathi in collaboration with Indian Adult Education Association, New Delhi, from 17th to18th July, 2024. The papers were subcategorized into 5 sections based on their themes.
