Much is written about relationships, but rarely does one find the subject approached with such depths of discriminating wisdom. Finally. whatever in this work enriches comes from the Guru Lineage. Swami Veda Bharati begins by holding a mirror by which we are tasked to ask and answer an intimate question. Are you unhappy? You are afraid to say, because a pure mind is a happy mind, and you admit you are unhappy. By that definition then there are impurities in your mind. Unhappiness or pain is a stain on the mind, and a stain on the mind is a pain. Throughout his life he applied these principles and examined the pain and sources of pain through constant self-observation and purification, thereby removing the sources of pain and suffering from his mind. These experiments along with his knowledge and insights from these life lessons are now shared for others to use on the path of successful relationships. Each of the Three Parts of this book will give insights and guidance in diverse ways yet are integrated into a whole picture with the theme of successful relationships. The Three Parts have themes or sections that can stand alone or be read in conjunction allowing the reader to follow the depths of experience that only a life-long meditator can offer. Swami Veda experienced the full range of human emotions and experiences that is usually referred to as the four stages of human life or four proper goals of human life (Purushartha), 1) disciplined and educated youth; 2) professional, married and family life in society; 3) professionally retired, volunteer and charitable contributions to others; 4) renunciation with full engagement in spiritual pursuits without attachments and desires as a goal in life. Each provided experiments that resulted in life experiences, some successful and some not so successful, yet all these became sources of knowledge and inspiration shared as lectures with his students during the 1980s. Throughout the first section, "Loving Relationships", he challenges the reader to engage in a dialogue with themselves. If you want to check the level of your purity, just check the total content of your thoughts. If you have painful thoughts and feelings that remain with you, then you have karma yet to be fulfilled. You will know that your karma is paid off and you owe no more debts to anyone when you have soothed the hearts and minds of everyone you have irritated. Swami Veda then guides us to embark on a personal project of self-improvement, emotional purification where the content of one's mind naturally and automatically becomes more pleasure-filled cultivating a pleasant state of mind. He reminds the reader to free one's self from conditioned and habitual responses resulting in undesirable effects through intentional living. At some point, you realize the inner strength of intention. Through your own choice, you must pull yourself out of your negative conditioned responses by your own act of volition.
