Book Description
About the Book
Ladakh, the land of silver rivers and daunting mountain passes, golden monasteries and rugged beauty, the land of mysteries that is, yet, a tourist hotspot. However, it is also more than the sum of these parts. Its diverse communities and cultural practices give the region its unique identity. Ladakh is a place where daily life is intertwined with the spiritual relationship its people share with nature.

People Called Ladakh is a window into the mystical and vibrant social fabric of the region; a conscious attempt to look at 'culture' both past and present, tangible and intangible, inherited and evolving-through people's everyday experiences. The thirty-two pieces included in the book look at its flora and fauna, soil and geology, textiles, trade and travel routes, as well as languages, rituals and practices. The fifteen contributors to this collection come from varied backgrounds: researchers, cultural practitioners, local architects, anthropology students, and a Buddhist nun. Capturing Ladakh through the lens of empathy, they give voice to a people who are actively combining traditional ecological knowledge with current sustainable practices.

An intimate testament to its enduring spirit, these essays show us that a land and its people are not two independent entities; they are joined by a vital force that makes Ladakh alluring to visitors from across the world.
