Book Description
Preface

Ajit Shuk Deo Sharma was certainly one of the Jaina scholars who have contributed on diverse aspects of Jaina Philosophy. However, the greater part of his philosophical work remains unpublished perhaps due to his simple and modest character. When a philosopher's sustained efforts attain a certain degree of respect among his peers, one of the methods of paying this respect is to publish a collection of essays in his honor. The idea of bringing Professor A.S.D. Sharma felicitation volume was Initiated by Professor Siyaram Tiwari a very close friend of Prof Sharma at Hindi Bhavana, Visva Bharati. Prof Sharma devoted his whole life studying and teaching Jaina Philosophy and practiced Jaina Philosophy in his Life and action. The present collection of papers represents an endeavor along this line, presenting for the first time in one volume mainly the philosophical aspects of Jaina philosophy. A glance at the contents of this book will show that all the contributions are divided in two general types, theoretical, interpretive essays and the practice or the contributions of Jain philosophy to moral phenomena. The essays in this volume are expected to help the reader to see that Jainism is not a religion that is to be preached but a philosophy and way of life, which need to be lived through. Before concluding these remarks, I would like to extend my gratitude to each of the contributors for their generous cooperation. Overseeing the present tribute has been an immense pleasure.

About The Book

This collection of papers presents aspects of Jaina philosophy for the first time in one volume. Contributions are divided in two general types, theoretical, interpretive essays and the practical i.e., the contributions of Jaina philosophy to moral phenomena. The essays are expected to help the reader to see that Jainism is not a religion that is to be preached but a philosophy and way of life, which needs to be lived through. In presenting this anthology to the readers we welcome them to a wide and open arena of thought, and we do hope them to realize that Jainism does not deserve to be forgotten, and does deserve a philosophical hearing in respect of our judgements of life and existence.
