पुस्तक परिचय हिन्दी साहित्य के शिखर हरिशंकर परसाई की व्यंग्य रचनाएँ स्वतन्त्र भारत का असली चेहरा हैं। परसाई ने बाजार के सुरसापन को अपनी सशक्त लेखनी से भरसक निस्तेज करने का प्रयास किया है। आज परसाई जीवित होते तो पचास साल के दर्पण में जितने भव्य और रंगीन चित्र दिख रहे हैं या दिखाये जा रहे हैं उनका अस्तित्व ही न होता और कुछ दूसरे ही भयावह चित्र हमारे सामने जीवित होते । आजादी के बाद इस देश की जनता को एक-के-बाद एक अनेक मिथकों ने लील लिया। अभागी जनता बार-बार छली जाती रही। इस पृष्ठभूमि में परसाई जी की रचनाओं को देखने पर पता चलेगा कि वे स्वतन्त्रता के बाद भारतीय समाज को गढ़ने और तोड़नेवाली सारी घटनाओं को तीव्रता से देख रहे थे। वे भीतरी पोल को समझ रहे थे। वे कूट करिश्मों से अवगत थे। वे चैतन्य और स्फूर्त थे। उनके लेखक ने कभी धोखा नहीं खाया। उनके जैसा रचनात्मक जोखिम उठानेवाले लेखक समकालीन समाज में बिरले थे। 'प्रेमचन्द के फटे जूते' शीर्षक से यह प्रतिष्ठित कथाकार ज्ञानरंजन द्वारा सम्पादित हरिशंकर परसाई की प्रतिनिधि रचनाओं का संचयन है। इन रचनाओं में परसाई ने अपने युग के समाज का, उसकी बहुविध विसंगतियों, अन्तर्विरोधों और मिथ्याचारों का उद्घाटन किया है। इन रचनाओं में हँसी से बढ़कर जीवन की तीखी आलोचना है। परसाई का समग्र रूप अनूठा है। उनके पास स्मृति है और तर्क है। तर्क मनहूसी को काटता है और चपल विनोदवृत्ति तथा ठाठदार हास्य की शैली से आगे बढ़ जाता है। प्यार और भक्ति के समुद्र के बीच परसाई ने अपनी ज्वलन्त और मौलिक खड़ी बोली में भारतीय समाज की असंख्य पेंटिंग्स बना डालीं। प्रेमचन्द के बाद वे हिन्दी में सबसे अधिक पढ़े जानेवाले रचनाकार हैं। हरिशंकर परसाई के दिवंगत होने के बाद अब जबकि काफी समय गुजर गया है, स्पष्ट रूप से उनकी रचनाओं पर बहुत गम्भीर विमर्श हो सकता है। परसाई के बारे में एक विचारक ने यह टिप्पणी की थी कि स्वतन्त्रता के बाद के भारत को अगर जानना हो तो वह परसाई की रचनाओं में दिखेगा । भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ को प्रसन्नता है कि उसे परसाई के दो व्यंग्य कथा-संग्रह 'सदाचार का तावीज़' और 'जैसे उनके दिन फिरे' के बाद उनकी रचनाओं का यह तीसरा संकलन, जिसमें गद्य की लगभग सभी विधाओं की प्रतिनिधि व्यंग्य-रचनाएँ हैं, पाठकों के हाथों में समर्पित करने का सौभाग्य मिल रहा है।
