The Fifty-sixth session of the Indian History Congress was held at the Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta, from December 28 to December 30, 1995 with participation of more than 900 members. This Proceedings Volume of the session contains the presentation of papers in this session.
Due to serious constraints, including finance, we could publish only a small percentage of more than 350 papers presented in the sessions under different sections. We regret that we are unable to publish the rich discussions followed on the papers in the sessions. Unfortunately, neither the Sectional President for Ancient India nor the Sectional President for Medieval India could come due to un-foreseen circumstances. Former Sectional Presidents. Prof. B.N. Mukherjee, Prof. N.N. Bhattacharya and Prof. Sushil Chaudhury presided over these Sections as per usual practice of the Indian History Congress. We are most grateful to these scholars for performing these onerous duties at a moment's notice.
No attempt has been made in this volume to standardize the notes which are kept as end-notes. The spellings of authors, titles, persons and places are kept the way the authors desired these to be.
Abbreviations used here are listed separately (p. VII). As per the decision of the Executive Council at Calcutta, the earlier practice of numbering of paragraphs have been done away with.
Following the usual practice, Symposia Papers are not included in this volume and are available to members separately (List in p.
VIII). Prof. S. C. Mishra Annual Endowment Lecture, introduced in this session, will also be available for sale.
In publishing this volume, we are thankful to a large number of people including Ramkrishna Chatterjee, Ranjusri Ghosh, Jasmin Ara Begum, Barun De, Sanat Bose, Ranjit Ray and Ratnabali Chatterjee. They have worked ungrudgingly and without break during the paltry summer heat of Calcutta. We are also grateful to Dwijen Jha. Dwijen Tripathi and Shireen Moosvi for helping us in various ways. Unfortunately, the health of R.L. Shukla did not permit him to work and he had to resign for his ill-health.
We are grateful once again to the generous grant sanctioned by the Indian Council of Historical Research. Without this support, this volume could not have been published.
We are also thankful to Messrs. Firma KLM Pvt. Ltd... particularly to Sekhar Ghosh, and to Sri Partha Sarkar of Messrs. Prakashana, for printing it in very quick time. As a result, certain mistakes, the Printer's Devil, have crept in, which, we are sure, would be excused by our kind members. We are grateful to the authorities of the University of Calcutta and particularly to the Department of Islamic History & Culture, to allow us to function from the premise of the Department. We are also thankful to the office staff, Sri Aurobinda Ghosh and Sri Bachchu Singh, for working long hours in late evenings. We hope that this volume will prove as popular as the earlier ones.
