Book Description
About the Book
The book "The Protected Princes of India: Absence of Authoritative Roles of Treatment" delves into the intricate dynamics between British colonial rule and the indigenous princely states of India. It contrasts ordinary administrative systems with political ones, highlighting Rome's historical failures and the absence of successful modern precedents. The book analyzes the necessity and risks of British jurisdiction introduction, emphasizing geographical and administrative obstacles to union. Chapters explore treaty-making processes, non-intervention policies, annexation strategies, and evolving post-1857 union policies. It evaluates obligations regarding defense, external relations, internal administration, and those derived from the royal prerogative, culminating in discussions on British jurisdiction within native states. Overall, it elucidates the complex ties binding British India and its princely counterparts.

About the Author
Sir William Lee-Warner (1846-1914), a British colonial administrator and author, served in the Indian Civil Service, notably as Chief Commissioner of Coorg in 1895. His notable work, "Protected Princes of India" was published in 1894.

Preface
THE design of these chapters is to bring together in one view, from sources of information which, if they are somewhat concealed, are yet accessible to the public, a short account of India under Home Rule. Mr. Tupper, in his suggestive and interesting work on Our Indian Protectorate, reckons the states at 629, but if the Burmese states are included, the calculation is increased to 688. This sketch is con-fined to the more limited area, 604,717 square miles, of the principalities and chiefships which lie within the recognised boundaries of British India, exclusive of Baluchistan, Nepal, and the Shan states, being inhabited by a population of more than 65 millions.
