This book falls neatly into four sections. In the first part of the book the author describes the society and culture of Lucknow city, the development of British policies towards the Awadh Court and the reasons for the annexation of the province in 1856. In the second part of the book, he turns to the Awadh countryside and examines rural society the Rajput lineages, the rising taluqdari magnates, the religious topography and the impact of annexation in 1856. In the third part of the book, he tells the tale of the outbreak of the rebellion in Awadh, the siege of the Residency, the tribulations of the relieving forces, something of the character of the support for the rebel cause, of trimming taluqdars and of the reconquest of the Awadh country-side.
In the fourth part of the book, he sketches the metamorphosis of the taluqdar into the image of the English country gentleman, bemoans the careless neglect of the many buildings raised by the Awadh Court, and deplores the presence of the 'new Hindu rulers.
