Book Description
Preface

The K. S. R. Institute has great pleasure in bringing out the present book entitled "Samskrta and Sangita" consisting of articles on music and dance by Dr. S. S. Janaki.

The Institute has collected all the published and unpublished articles of Dr. Janaki with a view to publish them in four volumes. The first volume entitled "Some Aspects of Sanskrit Drama and Dramaturgy" comprising of twenty articles by her on the subject was published by the Institute in 2005, commemorating the Institute's Diamond Jubliee.

A worthy pupil of the great savant Dr. V. Raghavan, she had imbibed his deep interest in the fields of Sahitya, Sangita, Natya and had dedicated herself to the studies of these Jastras, covering both the laksana and laksyamsas.

The present volume on "Samskrta and Sangita" is a collection of 12 articles on the subject. The first three articles deal with the title itself, tracing the connection between Samskrta and Sangita from Vedic times and the last three with related fields of Niitya and Alankdra siistras. In between are the six bulky articles specifically on Muttusvami Diksitar and his krtis.

Of these six, the first is about Diksitar and his Krtis in general; the second deals with Diksitar and the city of Tiruvarur; the third and fourth deal with Ganapati Kirtanas in general and the Maha and Ucchista Ganapatis in particular; the fifth article is on the Caturdasa ragamalikii - Sri Visvandtham bhaje' ham and the sixth article is on the Navagraha Kirtanas. The last two articles by themselves can be considered asindependent monographs. Dr. Janaki has provided the texts with translation and has made quite a deep study of these krtis. These articles provide a fund of information to the research scholars on Diksitar and his krtis.

The Institute gratefully acknowledges the financial assistance granted by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, for publishing this book.

We are also indebted to the authorities of various Journals, for giving us permission to publish the articles in this volume.

Dr. Sita Sundar Ram, Senior research fellow of the Institute and Ms. R. Subasri and Ms. Ramadevi Sekhar, the academic staff of the Institute, have assisted the editorial committee in proof-reading. Ms. V. Anusha has been responsible for the preparation of the Index. ,

Ms. K. Vidyuta (Post-graduate student in Sanskrit) deserves our sincere thanks for type- setting, lay-out and wrapper design of this text.

M/s. Sri Sai Suja Enterprises are to be thanked for the neat printing and nice get-up of this book.
