Book Description
Foreword
Keeping in tune with the Bhavan's motto of "Let the noble thoughts come to us from every side", the Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bengaluru is bringing out this collection of capsules and words of wisdom from ancient times to the present day, from Eastern and Western sources. The title of this little volume "SAMSKRTI" is meaningful, for, it is a treasure-house of both ancient and modern sayings which have contemporary relevance, leading to improved moral and cultural living. Culled out from ancient Indian scriptures like the Vedas and Upanishats, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, Samkrta kavyas and natakas, Bhartrhari, Subhashitas, Jainism, Buddhism, The Bible, Holy Quran, Tirukkural, Vachanas and Dasa Sahitya, Sarvajna and also quotes from Sri Ramana Maharshi, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhiji and from the Western sources. The collection is designed to be a companion pocket-book for all, particularly the students. I feel confident that the publication of this collection of sayings of eternal values would be welcome, read and practised. The fact that all the copies of the first two editions were quickly sold out speaks for the popularity of the booklet and the interest that the young have in Indian morality and value system. I am glad to appreciate the painstaking work by our outstanding scholars and researchers in collecting the various valuable quotes from eastern and western sources and presenting them in this booklet in a lucid way.

Preface
It is indeed extremely gratifying that since its first publication six years ago, a second edition of SAMSKRTI is being brought out on popular demand. Not only students and general readers but scholars and specialists in different disciplines like the Scriptures, Classical and Modern literatures in various languages, philosophy and general knowledge have found it a useful reference work to be placed on their desk along with a dictionary. It goes without saying that this popularity is entirely due to the dedicated work of well-known scholars. Their contributions, full of deep knowledge, circumspection and choice pertaining to their own fields have resulted in this compendium. The Gandhi Centre of Vidya Bhavan deserves to be congratulated for bringing out this second edition, justifying its motto 'Let noble thoughts come to us from every side'.

Introduction
An attempt has been made here to illustrate the Motto of the Bhavan "Let thoughts come to us from every side". From this message from the times of the Rgveda to the brink of this millennium, "noble thoughts" from a wide variety of sources have been collected here by many scholars of repute in the fields of their special interests. Speaking of the "Highest Common Factor" as the essence of what is called "Perennial Philosophy", Aldous Huxley says, "More than twenty-five centuries have passed since that which has been called Perennial Philosophy was first committed to writing." In the small space of this volume an attempt has been made to present "Perennial Wisdom and Culture," culled from the both eastern and western sources from ancient times to the modern. Such being the case, some thoughts are inevitably repeated which strengthens the case for universal Human Values. There is no question of "originality" in a book like this as it contains only quotations. Necessarily, some editing has taken place and any anthology is ultimately personal. The various scholars who have contributed to SAMSKRTI have naturally chosen their own favourite quotations. In the interest of convenience some of the passages in poetry have been paraphrased into prose. SAMSKRTI means "Culture", Mathew Arnold, in his 'Culture and Anarchy" says "The great aim of culture is the aim of setting oursleves to ascertain what perfection is and to make it prevail". Culture is simply an awareness and practice of the best that has been thought and said in the world which helps in the dissemination of "Sweetness and Light." Gandhiji said, "Culture is the foundation, the primary thing. It should show in the smallest deail of your conduct and personal behaviour, how you sit, how you talk, how you walk, how you dress, etc. Inner culture must be reflected in your speech, the way in which you treat your visitors and guests and behave towards one another and your teachers and elders." It is only appropriate that Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values is bringing out this volume.
