On the peak of the Sabari Hills at the southern tip of the Sahyadri range stretching southward into Kerala is the adobe of Lord Shri Dharma Shastha popularly known as Ayyappa. Born out of the union of Lord Shiva and lord Vishnu (In the guise of Mohini) Ayyappa is considered the third son of Shiva.

He was born on the auspicious day of Makara Sankranthi and the purpose of his mortal life was to annihilate the fiercesome Asura Mahishi. Having accomplished this task he expressed his desire to return to Devalok when the kind requested a temple to be built for him. Ayyappa aimed an arrow that fell on a place called sabari. The sacred temple was built at this very place and was sanctified by Parashuram. Devotees of Lord Ayyappa go through 41 days penance before embarking on pilgrimage to the Sabarimala. During this period daily pooja is performed by them. At the end of the pooja after the arathi they chant the Namasakara slokas. These beautifully worded slokas describe Lord Ayyappa in all his glory and also signify total surrender and protration to the Lord.
