Inspector Samar Pratap Singh (Manoj Bajpai), arrives in Motihari, a small town in Bihar, his new posting, with his wife Manjri (Raveena Tandon), and daughter Sonu. When he arrests some of Bacchu Yadav’s (Sayaji Shinde) men on charges of rioting, and they are acquitted, Samar finds himself in a situation where his honesty, integrity and his belief in the rule of law are put to question. Bacchu Yadav is an anarchist, a politician who believes he is above the law. He controls and manipulates all arms of the government and the officials are his minions.
The gross corruption and the moral decay prevalent does not deter Samar Pratap. Rather it strengthens his resolve. In his quest for his beliefs he pays a heavy price both personal and professional.
First time director E. Nivas has drawn out some wonderful performances from his cast. Raveena Tandon, shorn of her glamour, delivers a stand out histrionic performance. Sayaji Shinde is evil personified sending chills down your spine whenever he comes on the screen. The film won the National Awards 1999 for Best Regional Film (Hindi).
