Preface
The word sanatana is generally translated as perpetual, constant, eternal, permanent; but it is much more than these denotations. 'एष धर्मो सनातनः' (Manu. 4.138). Kullūka Bhatta, the authoritative commentator on Manusmrti, translates it as 'वेदमूलतया नित्यो धर्म:' Prior to this, the term sanatana is employed in the Bhagavadgītā (4.31/8.20/11.18). Although not men-tioned in the vedic samhitas, the term has clear connections with the vedas as instructed by Kullūka Bhatta. Whatever has its roots in the vedas, is nitya or sanatana. As the vedas teach the importance of the varņāśrama dharma, ethical background of human existence and inclusivity, the hindu dharma auto-matically and most suitably comes under the vast umbrella of the vedic essence of existence. The vedas put the rästra and dharma at the highest pedestal and so does the hindu or sanātana hindu way of life (or hindutva). Sanātana value system is eternal that is known to one and all on this great land of Bhāratavarsa. Even illiterate and not well-acquainted with sanatana theoretical constructs of sanātana texts such as the vedas and dharmaśāstras, also im-bibed this all-pervasive sanātana value-system. It is amazing that this has happened for generations in Bhāratīya society. From the earliests known days of external aggression, sanātana cultural values and structure were sought to be dismantled.
