As an office of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Department of Education, Government of India, the Central Institute of Indian Languages is charged with the responsibility of serving as a nucleus to bring together all the research and literary output from the various linguistic streams to a common head and narrowing the gap between the basic research and developmental research in the field of languages and linguistics in India.
In order to achieve the goals, set before it, the Institute brings out research monographs, instructional materials, literacy maps, etc., as part of its publications schedule every year.
In India, in linguistics and linguistics-related research areas, Ph.D. these are the major sources of new knowledge. But most of these theses do not get published as the private publishers generally do not care for these theses for business reasons. And the Indian universities also do not have regular publications schedule. As such, several important findings brought out by the Ph.D. dissertations do not reach the other investigators, resulting in duplication at one end and lack of progress in research at the other end.
The findings in linguistics and other language related disciplines have a direct relevance for language teaching at various levels of education. They are useful for identification of error-prone areas of language learning and for the development of strategies for material production for different learners. They are useful for sociological, anthropological, psychological and communication research as well. They have immense value of practical application in many fields. Therefore, the need is great for disseminating the research findings through publication of research reports and theses.
