About the Book

Sir Asutosh Mookerjee A Tribute is being published jointly by the University of Calcutta and Asutosh Mookerjee Memorial Institute on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of the great mathematician. educationist, jurist, administrator and visionary The book is a collection of the Convocation addresses delivered by Sir Mookerjee. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta for the first time in March 1906 and held Office for four successive terms (1906-1914). The list of Convocation addresses has been prepared accordingly from March 2, 1907 to the address on March 28, 1914. In the first phase of eight years there had been 11 addresses. For different reasons and occasions there had been more than one addresses, in the years 1911 (2) and 1913(3). Again when he became Vice-Chancellor in 1921 in the last phase, there had been four addresses up to 1923. The addresses have been collected and corroborated by the University from different numbers of The Calcutta Review and Convocation Addresses published by University Press, University of Calcutta. From Asutosh Mookerjee Memorial Institute, the main source is Addresses Literary and Academic published by R. Cambray and Co. in 1915. (in the life time of Sir Asutosh Mookerjee) and convocation addresses printed and published by the Calcutta University Press preserved in the Asutosh Collection. Genuine efforts have been made to make the collection comprehensive and error-free as far as possible.

Fortified with all modern intellectual equipment in science literature and law gifted with an imagination worthy of a creator, possessing enthusiasm and endurance rarely equalled, Sir Asutosh Mookerjee was one of the greatest of men born of any age (His) whole passion of life was the intellectual regeneration of his country With extraordinary acuteness, combined with character with a strict sense of justice. blended with humane perceptions, imbued with old as well as modern culture, he was undoubtedly the most outstanding personality in modern India, whose phenomenal achievements will mark an era of progress in this country (Sir Asutosh Mookerjee A Tribute Kolkata, University of Calcutta, 2013, p. 199).

Acharya Prafulla Chardra Ray the eminent scientist and Calcutta University's first Palit Professor of Chemistry-paid this tribute to Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, drawing attention to his academic excellence judicial acumen, exceptional expertise in academic administration, and a deep commitment to the nationalist cause.

Sir Asutosh had a particularly close and constructive relationship with the of Calcutta for at least 35 years, from 1889 when he became a member of the University Syndicate till he breathed his last in 1924. During his two eventful tenures as Vice-Chancellor of the University - first between 31 March 1906 and 30th March 1914 and again from 4th April 1921 to 3 April 1923 the University reached new heights. To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of this illustrious son of Bengal, the Calcutta University has initiated a project to document how, in the words of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, (Sir) Asutosh touched the Calcutta University with the magic wand of his creative will in order to transform it into a living organism belonging to the life of the Bengali people.
