1. THE PUNYASRAVA-KATHA-KOSA
The Jinaratna-kosa (Vol. I, H. D. Velankar, Poona 1944) records, under Punyasrava, works by Ramacandra Mumuksu, by Nemicandragani and by Nagaraja, besides an anonymous one. The Punyasrava or Punyasrava-katha-kosa (Pkk) of Ramacandra Mumuksu has been quite a popular work especially among the pious Jainns who have looked upon its study as fruitful and meritorious. The Mss. of this Sanskrit work are found in various parts of the country; and it is seen from the Jinaratnakosa that they are available in the Bhandarkar O. R. Institute, Poona; in the Laksmisena Bhattaraka's Matha, Kolhapur; in in the Manekchanda Hirachanda Bhandara, Chowpatty, Bombay; etc. From the Kaunada Prantiya Tadapatriya Granthasuci (ed. K. Bhujabali Shastri, Bharatiya Jhanapitha, Benares 1958) it is noted that some Mss. of Pkk are found in the Jaina Matha, No. 712 and Jaina Bhavana, No. 73, at Moodbidri (Dt. S. K.). In the Rajasthanake Jaina-sastrabhandaroki Granthasuci (RJG), Parts I-IV, Jaipur 1948-62, some Mss. of Pkk are noted: Part I, Amera p. 102, Mahavira p. 195, and on p. 39f. the Prasasti is fully given; Part II, p. 21 (1 Ms. incomplete but dated Samvat 1473), p. 238 (3 Mss.), p. 376 (1 Ms.); and Part IV, p. 233. One Ms. is reported from the Strassburg Collection as well (Vienna Oriental Journal, Vol. II, 1897, pp. 279 f.). Some More Mss. of this work are found in Belgol, Bombay, Mysore and other places. It is quite likely that some Mss. might be lying here and there in private collections also.
Further, the Pkk has attracted the attention of readers in such a way that from pretty early times its translations are prepared in different languages. A similar work in Kannada, in the Campu style, possibly based on this Sanskrit text, was composed by Nagaraja in A. D. 1331 (Kannada Kavicarite, Vol. 1, Bangalore 1924, pp. 409-12). This Kannada version is further translated into Marathi Ovis by Jinasena in Saka 1743, i, e., 1821 A. D. I am given to understand that this Marathi version is already printed and published. Some Old-Hindi versions of this are available: 1) One is prepared by Daulataramaji (samvat 1777, i. e., 1720); and Mss. of this work are found reported in the RJG noted above: Part II, p. 21; Part III, pp. 84, 226; Part IV, p. 233, It is stated that he used the Pkk of Pande Jinadasa, whose Old-Hindi Anuvada as seen from a Ms. in the collection of the Laksmisena Matha, Kolhapur, was composed at the time of Akbar. 2) Another is attributed to Jayacandra, Ibidem part I. Amera p. 102 (incomplete). 3) A third is composed by Tekacanda, Ibid. Part IV, p. 234. 4) And lastly, one more by Kisanasimha (Samvat 1773), Ibid. Part III, p. 125. It is only after studying these Mss. one can definitely say how far and in what manner the work of Ramacandra is used by them.
Lately, the Hindi translation of this Sanskrit text was prepared by Pt. Nathuram Premi and published thrice (Bombay 1907, 1916 and 1959). There is another Hindi translation by Paramanand Visharad (Calcutta 1937) as reported in the Prakasita Jaina Sahitya, Pannalal Jain Agrawal, Delhi 1958, p. 184.
2. CRITICAL APPARATUS
This edition of the Pkk is based on the following Mss.:
Ja This Ms. belongs to Sri D. J. Atisaya Ksetra Mahaviraji, Jaipur. It has 117 folios with 14 lines on each page and with some 39 letters in each line. It mentions neither the name of the copyist nor the date of copying. It is collated from p. 172 onwards in this edition.
Pa-This Ms: belongs to the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona, No. 1081 of 1884-87. It measures 12 by 5 inches. It has 140 folios with 11 lines on each page and with some 42-45 letters in each line. It is dated Samvat 1795 (-57-1738 A. D.). It was corrected at Savai Jayapura by Merukirti; and then, it was presented to his teacher Harsakirti by Gulaba-candaji. The relevant concluding extract reads thus:
संवत् १७६५ माहमासे शुक्लपक्षे पंचम्यां तिथी गुरुवासरे सवाइ जयपुरनगरे श्री नेमिनाथ चैत्यालये आचार्यजी श्री हर्षकीत्तिजी तत्तिष्य आचार्य मेरुकीर्त्तित्तना स्वहस्तेन इदं ग्रन्थं सोधितं चिरंजीवि श्री गुलाबचंदजी भरसागोत्र लिषाप्य आचार्य इपेकीर्त्तये प्रदत्तं ।।
Pha-This Ms. belongs to D. J. Muni Dharmasagara Granthabhandara, Akaluj (Dt Sholapur). It contains 126 folios, each page having 14 lines and each line some 36-41 letters. It is written by Dharmasagara, the disciple of Santisagara, possibly in Samvat 2005, from a Ms. from Phaltan and dated Samvat 1896. The concluding prasasti runs thus:
इदं शास्त्रं लिखितं पूर्वग्रंथानुसारेण संवत् १८९६ फलटण आदिनाथमंदिरस्य ग्रंथस्य द्वितीय प्रति लिखित श्री निमगांवग्रामे श्री चंद्रप्रभजिनचैत्यालये पूर्वाचार्यान्वये श्री आचार्य श्री १०८ शांतिसागर महाराज शिष्य मुनिधर्मसागरेण स्वहस्तेन लिखितं ।। यादृशं पुस्तकं दृष्टं तादृशं लिखितं मया। यच्छुद्धमशुद्धं वा मम दोषो न दीयते ।। वीरसंवत् २४७५ शके २००५ आश्विनमासे कृष्णपक्षे तृतीयातिथौ सोमवासरेऽयं ग्रंथः समाप्तः ॥ भो भव्याः पठंतु शृण्वंतु प्रतिलिख्यं कुबेतु तैलावलादक्षां कुर्युः ।
