Foreword
The present monograph contains the report of the excavation carried out by Dr. Joshi in the natural rock-shelters situated on the Narmada river in Central India. The excavation has revealed a succession of cultures from Early Stone Age to Late Stone Age (Mesolithic) through Middle Stone Age. Besides, it has yielded considerable evidence on the ecology at this prehistoric habitation Although this work was carried out by Dr. Joshi during his service in the Archaeological Survey of India he has elaborated it by his experience gained at the Deccan College and visits abroad. It is perhaps the first detailed report on the excavation of the Stone Age rock shelters in India. When the Deccan College thought of its publication the Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India most graciously gave the permission to print it and also made available to the College all illustrations included in this monograph. The present monograph is thus an outcome of the joint efforts of these two leading organizations pursuing research in prehistory in India.

Preface
Very few regions in the Indian sub- continent can match the rich prehistoric cultural heritage of Central India. Environmentally also this region appears to have been more favoured from prehistoric times, and it is no wonder therefore, that almost all the river valleys in Central India have yielded relics of man through the ages.
