Book Description
About the Book
Stone craftsmen in India far outnumber those employed in any other craft, metal, wood or clay. They carry within themselves a high degree of skill and an enviable capability to change and adapt to new consumer needs. This flexibility coupled with an abundance of raw material can create a vigorous industry of stone cutters, dressers, sculptors and users. This book attempts to bring the many facets of stonecraft between its covers.

Preface
The publication, "STONECRAFT OF INDIA" in two volumes is the outcome of thorough, exhaustive and painstaking survey and study conducted by the Crafts Council of India, Chennai. It not only gives a panoramic views of the robust traditions of stone craft as practiced in different parts of the country, but also unfolds the rich cultural values and ritualistic significance of the craft evidenced in various layers of Indian history. I congratulate the Crafts Council of India on their efforts in documenting and publishing such valuable information which will be a great asset to posterity. This document, I am confident, will be a treasure house of designs of sculptures and information concerned with stone craft. The magnificent stone monuments and ancient temples found throughout the length and breadth of the country are a testimony of the antiquity of the craft and of the unhindered creative talent that has flown from father to son, from one millennium to the other. The gigantic conception of the project and its execution is indeed commendable. The project covers fourteen States from Uttar Pradesh in the north to Kerala in the South, Maharashtra in the West to Nagaland in the North-East. The illustrations as well as the text provide a wealth of information, and the Crafts Council of India can legitimately feel proud of its achievement. "In the age of machine-tooled monotony, the hand-tooled stone sculptures stand as symbols of a ceaseless flow creativity" said the high priestess of arts and crafts, Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay. I am extremely happy to give this short preface to this publication, and I wish to express my deep appreciation at the great efforts put in by the Crafts Council of India in bringing out this mammoth publication.

Introduction
This book has been developed from a project sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts over ten years ago. Crafts Council of Iris felt that the beauty an skills of Indian stone work were not as well recognised in Indian crafts as was their due. People with access to stone craftswomen saw the need for a detailed study of what was and shut exists in the craft The Government agreed to sponsor a project which would document the status of the stone crafted India. Seven design graduates from NID were hired to cover the states. The late Ranjan Sen Gupta for Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, Sukumar Haobam for the North Eastern states, Rani Singh for Malays Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, Kaushik Ramanathan for Gujarat and Maharashtra, Elizabeth Job for Rajasthan, Suresh Kumar for Kerala and Karnataka anıl Ravi Shankar for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Each had a working knowledge of the language of his/her region. Sis volumes of data were compiled into four copies each for the Government and Crafts Council archives. Data from thew documents were then converted into this book. This book has been made possible by the generous financial assistance granted by the Department of Culture, Government of India.

The original brief for the document was to cover prominent stone working states. Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were not included as they did not possess a major history of stone work, though Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are home to raw materials like slate and limestone. Kashmir being difficult to cover was also not part of the survey Documentation covers the state of a craft as it is. This includes an understanding of the raw material, the people who practise the craft, its history and the existing product, tools and production methods. Every craft is not approached in exactly the same way as each has its own specialities. Thus in the documentation and now in the book, data are compiled into three main areas: Understanding the raw material, the history of the craft and the existing status of the craft.
